Does anyone have stories where a kid didn't think they'd get into a program, but did?

I've heard that it happens every year....kids think they bombed an audition, but get it. Or the Auditioners never looked up while a kid auditions, but they get in. I could use some hopeful stories! Thanks!

No dance call at audition - what does it mean?

If a program has no dance call as part of the audition, does this mean that dance is less emphasized in the program? I have read that UArts is "good for dancers" so was puzzled that at Unifieds UArts had no dance call.

Did anyone attend New York Unified Auditions 2018 that could tell me about the experience? I am attending Chicago so trying to get as much info and advice that I can. Did any of the more known schools accept walk up auditions. How was the Dance Call set up this year. Any info you could share would be helpful. Thank you for your time.

This was mentioned on another thread and thought it would be an interesting topic. Any program you wish in hindsight you should have applied to?

The best merit-based MT Scholarships

To attract top talent, some Music(al) Theater programs offer merit-based scholarships; they don't necessarily award it each year... just when they identify candidates who meet the criteria. For those who have gone through (or follow) the application process, what are the top ones you have seen? If all you recall is the school / scholarship name that suffices; if you know the criteria that's helpful too. If there are any MT scholarships that are unaffiliated with any particular institution, I would be interested in learning about them too (although I don't know if any such scholarships exist related to MT). Just looking for your top one to five MT scholarships that you've seen and that most impressed you. Thanks for sharing for those new to the process!

I would love to hear from current students or parents of current students in the Drake University MT program. My D has just been offered a place in next year's program and I'm now on the hunt for more information and experiences with the program. Thank you!

My S got in and this is one of the schools he didn't audition on campus for, so he doesn't feel he has a good feel for the program or the people in it. It was just one auditor at NYC Unifieds, who took the time to talk to him and was very nice, but that's the only contact he's had. Would love input from anyone who knows about the positives and possible negatives of that program. I know one concern has been recent large class sizes...

After graduation experiences

So...I would love to hear from some people who have children that have recently graduated from Mt / Acting programs and what their child is doing now in terms of job, etc. You don't have to go into great detail I am just pondering how my D's degree when she graduates (BFA in MT) will be very "specific" for lack of a better word & that is somewhat concerning to me. It always has been but I am wondering what some others have done with their BFA (or BA ) Theatre related degree . I mean I know the most recent kids are probably for the most part auditioning in various cities for performing based jobs & working a survival job but I am asking about those kids who have already decided the auditioning, etc is not for them or they did it for several years & now are pursuing more traditional consistent work....etc. I seem to remember someone posting about their D's experience but cannot remember who that was. I know my D would be able to teach theatre in a private school etc if she ever chose to do so but since she wouldn't have an education component to her degree she would be restricted to that and no public school, at least in our neck of the woods. Anyway would like to hear what some have done or are doing.

have no idea what to major in help

so im a freshman in college and I feel so lost and confused because I can't decide what to major in. I finished my gen ads in high school and I started undeclared, switched to political science, then pre nursing. and now I'm taking the nursing pre reqs and I absolutely hate it because science is not my best subject. But the only reason I did nursing is because I knew I would find a job after graduation. I love political science but my friends and family said that it was useless pursuing it. (especially my family because they don't want to see me doing any liberal arts degree). I go through the major catalog at least twenty times a day trying to pick a major that interests me but I can't because I feel like its too late to begin a new major. (freshman year is basically over). any advice would be much appreciated

Hi everyone. I'm hoping this can be helpful for someone who could use a few more school acceptances. Please join in. SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) accepts on a Rolling Base. Tuition may be a little cheaper than Urban Schools and they have a state of the art program for MT and Acting/ Film, Directing Stellar Adler 2 year program is still accepting applications in LA and New York Cornish College last week was accepting Video Auditions for Acting (unsure of MT please check) Columbia College in Chicago accepts on a rolling base

Sending additional emails??

I'm looking for thoughts and input on whether or not people think it's a good idea to send an additional email this week to a program that my D is super interested in? I don't want her to appear desperate (we aren't quite there yet with 1 acceptance and 1 waitlist) but the school that she's waiting to hear from (University of Miami) doesn't notify until next week and we want to make sure they know she's still very interested. She was a walk in at Chicago Unifieds and that always makes me wonder if the school might not think your level of interest is genuine? But maybe I'm overthinking it. This process has left me questioning all our moves. Thanks for any info provided.

I know we will have a “Class of...” thread over the summer, but I didn’t want to clutter up the current “class of ...” thread. What are you/your students doing now to get a head start on next year? I saw that common app essay prompts have been released. Is it a good idea to get started on essays this early? We have been paying attention to this year’s audition cycle - and hope to have more than half of the auditions completed before winter break. My d has been sick this winter, so putting all of our eggs in the Unifieds basket terrifies me. Anyway, just wanted to start a thread for all of us who are lurking around waiting for next audition cycle. <3

Advice needed - Strengths & Weaknesses

Hi, My daughter is a strong student ( 4.2 GPA) , will graduate with about 10 AP Classes and is ranked high in her class. She is a very strong dancer ( for MTE), strong actress and good singer. Sometimes great singer, sometimes not - depending on the style of music. She really has her sights set on majoring in MT in college although is concerned about how competitive it is. She was recently selected for Penn States Summer program and that has brought some confidence that maybe this can really happen. She is also going to Open Jar this summer. My question is ... how heavily will academics weigh? How much is dance an advantage ? And will the singing be a deal breaker if she doesn't pick just the right song for an audition? Her resume looks great on paper, her transcript and experiences look great and her recommendations are great. She has her heart set on this as a major and we are trying to decide how realistic that is? Any advice or help would be welcome!
