Great news! Finally a "common" prescreen

Should I ask to be switched to a filled class?

Hey everyone! Sorry for the long story. I'm starting my freshman year in the Fall and am majoring in musical theater. At orientation (June 12-13), I was specifically put into a major-only Acting I class. However, I was also accepted into a freshman leadership program yesterday. The program is highly selective (only 20-25 students are accepted each year and this is the school's largest incoming freshman class which I assume means a very large pool of applicants) and aims to help shape freshman into good leaders who can one day take on leadership positions at the school. It's something I'm very excited about doing, but as a part of the group, I have to take two classes that are specifically for members of the group. One of the classes conflicted with my scheduled Acting I class, but I was told to clear my schedule to be put into the leadership class. When registering for orientation, I didn't really plan on applying for the leadership program, so I didn't worry about making sure my schedule was cleared. Anyways, I dropped the conflicting major-only Acting I class and the only other Acting I classes available were open to non-majors. I'd really like to take the major-only class because the chair of the department mentioned the differences in atmosphere and work ethic among non-major classes and major-only classes at orientation. I have added the non-major class to my schedule at the moment. Should I email the department chair (it's a relatively small and informal department, he said to feel free to email us with any questions) and ask to be put into the major-only class? The class only capped at 16, so I figured one more wouldn't be too much of an issue, but I don't know if this is for a specific reason. Is this something that I just have to sacrifice to be in the leadership program?

As part of Playbill.com's Back to School week (#BwayBacktoSchool), we have combined our past Schools of the Stars features that track where major members of the cast and creative team on each Broadway show went to college, along with a bit of added research, to present the top 10 colleges currently represented on Broadway (plus honorable mentions).

We have also included a few performers from shows that will be opening during the upcoming season.

I know this is a regional type event but I am wondering if it is worth attending to just get out the nerves and get some experience? Do any schools actually accept students at this event? Any feedback would be great as I am considering since we live within a few hours drive.

Musical Theatre Writing as Arts Supplement

I am a student looking to apply to colleges next year, and I keep seeing options for arts supplements. As a hobby, I write musical theatre songs (as well as short plays). I was wondering if this would be a wise choice to submit one as an Arts Supplement, considering they're probably pretty rare, and if I should send the songs under a theatre or a music supplement. (FYI, I'm looking to double major in a STEM field and theatre, with a possible minor in music. I have Ivy League-level scores, and I hope to apply to elite schools of that caliber).

My kid got awesome acceptances and scholarship offers but financially they are still out of reach so considering gap year to scrape together more funds. Trying to figure out what this gap year should look like as this could be expensive as well. Any ideas? Anyone have experience with this?

MT programs for a strong dancer in California?

I act, sing and dance but dance is my strength. My main goal would be to be an ensemble dancer on broadway. I posted a similar question and have gotten many great replies but none of the suggested schools were in California, which is where I would love to be. Of course I consider the other states, but I would love to hear the best suggestions for California. Thank you!!

Two on campus auditions in a weekend

How difficult is it to do two on campus auditions in the same weekend if travel between the two schools is five to six hours? I realize this is a case of YMMV, but wondering if anyone has ever attempted anything like this, and whether or not they found the schedule / travel impacted ability to perform well in both or one audition (i.e., just too exhausting)? Did anyone attempt this if the schools were closer together, say two to three hours apart, and both auditions went well? Thank you for your feedback.

Decisions for Class of '23 ~ BY SCHOOL

Hello Class of '23 CC Members (family!)

It was suggested that we begin a new thread for us to see a snapshot of where each of our MT College Confidential Family will be going this fall. Since May 1st is upon us I decided to start our thread in celebration of the fact that we made it!

Please see instructions below on how to add yourself/son/daughter to the list! I'm "borrowing" last year's list and adding a few schools to it.... keeping the degrees that the former list had next to each school. If the degree you are doing is different, just note that next to member's name.

Carefully copy and paste the list AND these instructions. Add your name/info (in alphabetical order) under each school he/she was accepted so that is appears in red.

**To color it red, copy the code as it is below, add in your information, then REMOVE THE SPACE IN THE FIRST BRACKET BEFORE THE WORD "COLOR":
[ color=red] Name, D or S, home state [/color]
*Don't forget to remove space after the opening bracket so that it turns red!

All or Nothing Schools? Academic Acceptance, MT Department rejection.

$

Hello all,
We all know that MT acceptance percentages at the more popular programs (and even the non-popular programs) are very low - and as much as we love our talented children, we also know that they will undoubtedly face rejection from some or most of these schools.
My question is - are most schools an 'all-or-nothing' acceptance based on MT program acceptance? Meaning - if you get a 'no' from the MT program, you cannot attend the school at all?
If my child falls in love with one of these schools, and is willing to try to take their chances attending for a year with the hope of cracking the department once there, or pursuing another degree while still actively involved in MT - will they have that opportunity if not accepted as an MT major?
Some of the Colleges my child is looking at attending are very much in their academic profile as far a grades, scores, extras go - but might be a lightning strike/dart throw on the MT side of things.
Of course the goal is MT - and we've spread out the options wide, not just the big popular programs - we are just prepping everything ahead of next spring's decision process.
I have no doubt my child will pursue MT at any school where they are accepted first - it is their passion, and their chosen goal, but as a parent, I want to ensure that all options are on the table.
Obviously, I don't expect a full list of schools and their acceptance policies - but if anyone has any insight on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

This is our first time going through this whole process. Just needed some clarification on the process, or the order of the process.
Which to do first? Prescreens, then apply, then sign up for auditions, then unifieds??When should prescreens be completed in order to sign up for an audition time?
Any feedback or advice is much appreciated as we start this journey.

New Musical Theatre BA Program at Xavier University

Xavier University in Cincinnati has not been mentioned as of yet on the Musical Theatre Major board, so I thought I would give detailed information about the program in case anyone might be interested. My daughter went through the audition process last year and I lurked here daily and loved getting the inside scoop on programs, so here goes my impression!

I was beyond impressed with this small but mighty theatre department lead by program director, Stephen Skiles. My daughter ended up at a state school BFA Musical Theatre program due to a too good to turn down scholarship offer, but Xavier was her favorite as well as mine and her father’s once audition season ended. Xavier’s BA in Musical Theatre is a new degree program, currently in its 2nd year. They also offer a BA in Theatre and Theatre Education as well and those programs have been around a bit longer. I think they just graduated their first theatre students last year. What made Xavier a favorite of ours? Well, first of all, the audition process is truly centered on getting to know the prospective student. This is not a sing a few bars, do a short monologue and you're out the door type of thing. The director, Stephen, sat down and talked to my daughter for a half hour before even hearing her sing or do her monologue. This is done with each applicant. Also, all those auditioning get to sing full songs (ballad and uptempo). After the audition process was over, we were given a personal tour by a current theatre student who was happy to answer any questions we had. Another thing that we loved about Xavier is that since it is a BA program, double majors are allowed and encouraged. The theatre student who gave us our tour was a TRIPLE major and she told us she was set to graduate on time in 4 years.

Xavier is very ambitious when it comes to productions. Their season includes three musicals and around four or five dramatic plays. Combined with being a smaller theatre department in regard to the total number of students (the Musical Theatre program admits around 8 students a year), this means plenty of stage opportunities. They also work with New York’s Fault Line Theatre on a yearly basis, workshopping new plays. Stephen directs some of Xavier’s productions, but he also brings in noted guest directors. This coming spring they will be doing Sondheim’s Company and it will be directed by Pamela Myers who was nominated for a Tony in the original Broadway production. The theatre facilities are very nice. Large stage, state of the art technical aspects, and comfortable seating. They also have a smaller, more intimate theatre space. However, I will say that there is a shortage of classroom space for the theatre department. They are making do with a few rooms near the theatre. I think this is because the theatre department itself is relatively new—hopefully as they grow this will change. The lack of dedicated classroom space did not bother my daughter, but I suppose it might some.

I can vouch that Stephen is very responsive when it comes to students and parents wanting to learn more about the program. I emailed a few questions before my daughter’s audition and he was very warm, welcoming, and prompt in getting back to me. Once my daughter was accepted artistically into the program we inquired about her having a visit day. Stephen went over and beyond in arranging a great day for her. She got to work with Stephen and several other instructors one on one with her material, including a private voice lesson. She traveled around doing a normal college day with theatre students, having lunch and dinner with them. Afterwards they were currently rehearsing for a production of Cabaret and Stephen invited our daughter to stay for the rehearsal as well. She gushed about her visit when we picked her up and reported the students were wonderful and made her feel quite welcome. My husband and I got the chance to talk to Stephen at the beginning of the day and also at the end. One thing we noticed was that Stephen seemed very approachable and well loved by his students—they didn’t hesitate to ask him questions or come over to talk to him. He waved one girl over to tell her he had heard from New York Public Theatre and things were looking promising for an internship she applied for (which she eventually got!) He is a passionate advocate for the theatre program that he developed and a passionate advocate for his students.

My daughter loved Xavier and thought the world of Stephen. It was a bit heartbreaking to have to turn down admission there. If not for the full tuition plus scholarship from the state school she would be there right now. She is happy where she is at now and thriving, but I’m confident she’d be happy at Xavier as well. Stephen has set the tone for a very nurturing and positive environment. For those with sons or daughters open to a BA Musical Theatre program or wanting the opportunity to double or dual major, I’d heartily recommend checking Xavier out! It is kind of difficult to find information and direct links going through the main homepage for Xavier, so I’d suggest doing a google search using the terms Xavier Theatre Department to get you directly to audition information and more details about the programs they offer.

The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

It's time! These boards have been extremely helpful to date, and I can't wait to embark on this journey with each of you! I will start us off!

I have a D who is pursuing a degree in MT. She is equal singer and actor, followed by dance. She began voice lessons when she was in the 4th grade and quickly found her way to performing after that. She is the dreaded "cute blonde" - we know she will have to work extra hard to stand out in that regard. She attends a PA high school and is currently working on her list. She is casting a wide net - even thinking of Royal Conservatorie of Scotland as a possibility. She is attending RADA in London this summer to get a taste of what it is like to study overseas.

I am really looking forward to getting to know everyone! I just ordered my desk calendar on Amazon to put up in our study as I saw one of the first schools we are looking at posted their 2018/19 details.

Here we go!!!

Hopeful Musical Theatre Major - Please help !

Hi, I am a junior finishing up the year and hoping to start this process for next year. I am just so nervous I won't get into a BFA MT program and am looking for some good advice on schools that might be a good fit for me. I did participate in Penn States summer program last summer and loved it there but I know it is competitive - as is everything it seems. I definitely have the most interest in the BFA in MT but I also have had a lot of choreography experience regionally and in my school so having a strong dance program is important to me. I have done school, community and regional theatre since I was 5 and just had my first professional experience this year. I have danced for over 10 years, done gymnastics and this year choreographed both the middle school shows as well as the high school shows. I am on leadership at my school theatre department, won a Cappie for costuming and have been nominated for many awards regarding theatre. I am a strong dancer, told I am a great actor (?) and have to work really hard at my signing. I have a voice and acting coach for four years. I seem to always be cast in good parts (some leads, some ensemble) in both my school shows and regional theatre. I am going to be a dance captain for a regional production this summer. I take hard classes - will have taken 7 AP classes and 3 dual enrollments by the time I graduate. I have a 4.5 GPA and scored a 1280 on my SAT ( I hate tests!) . I am hoping someone will accept me into a MT program and am going to go to Unifieds this upcoming year. I am looking for any recommendations of schools - both large and small - I am open to anything / anywhere that I can sing and dance!!! If anyone has good advice on schools for me , PLEASE SHARE!!! Thank you in advance!

TCU BFA MT

There is not a lot of discussion about Texas Christian University’s BFA MT in this forum even though it's on the big list, so I thought that I would contribute now that my daughter is a freshman. Most information will be factual; however, we did interview close to 8-10 current students and alumni in the program before making a decision, so I will include some of their input if there was a strong consensus. My hope is to paint a picture of the program and university for you to decide if it is a match for your student.

LOCATION: TCU sits about 5 miles south from downtown Fort Worth. FW is a charming, historic city with a strong economy, lively nightlife and vibrant theatre scene. It is 30 minutes to Dallas and there are two accessible airports (DFW 30 minutes, Dallas Love, 45 minutes), giving a student a lot of options for flights. It is also a relatively milder climate than some other MT school options. Restaurants, Uber, upscale and mall shopping, as well as culture are nearby. There are a few restaurants and other basic needs within campus walking distance.

CAMPUS SETTING & ENVIRONMENT: It is a stunning 290-acre, park-like campus in a residential neighborhood. The campus makes a lot of the top rankings for its beautiful facilities and reflects a well-funded private university. The maintenance and amenities are exceptional and their top-rated dorms are continually being renovated as well as their state-of-the-art Rec Center. Additionally, their outstanding football stadium, sports facilities and academic buildings are continually being upgraded.

MT PROGRAM SIZE & ENVIRONMENT: There are 43 total students enrolled as BFA MT majors within the entire 4-year conservatory-style program and 33 total students in BFA Acting. My D’s Freshman MT class is 12 students, with a balanced male/female ratio. The smaller program was enticing to her because of the personal attention by faculty and more performance opportunities.

ACTING: The MT program is under the School of Theatre and my D and I have been very impressed with the 4 performances we have seen combined. The faculty has experience in the local professional theatre scene as well as Broadway experience; every summer they run a Shakespeare Festival on campus with professionals and students in the cast. OnStage Blog rated TCU #6 in the country this year for BFA MT programs.

DANCE: There is leveled dance class offerings that rotates each semester in the MT department. My D took advanced tap this semester and will take advanced jazz next semester. There is also opportunity to take classes in their top-ranked dance department, but you do have to audition into some. My D’s schedule is full with 18 units, so she has chosen to take dance in an outside studio for her first year because it works and the price was reasonable. The professional studio is close to campus so she is perfectly happy with this arrangement. I have been told by upperclassmen and alumni that the BFA schedule opens up more after the first year to fit more dance from the dance department.

SINGING: My D currently takes ½ hour private voice lessons through the School of Music each week, which is offered for MT majors all four years. She had extensive voice training prior to college, so the ½ hour is sufficient for her. It is possible to take one hour lessons as you progress into the upperclassmen curriculum. They also have MT Performance Lab twice a week, which incorporates singing and acting.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES: First, there are eight on-campus performance opportunities each year, two of which are musicals. Every other year they perform their musical at a larger, regional theatre in town. Additionally, they do the same thing for one of their plays. Freshman are often cast their first year and the smaller program size allows a reasonable opportunity to be cast every semester of their four year program. Students report fair casting in the program and honest feedback during this process,

CAREER DEVELOPMENT/PROFESSIONAL EXPOSURE/ALUMNI. TCU has great accessibility to professional experience for your resume by the time you graduate in order to build a network of references. According to rankings, DFW is the 4th largest theatre market in the country. While on-campus performances take precedence, there are at least 5 equity theatres in the DFW area that are well respected and known in the industry. Dallas Theatre Center won the 2017 Tony Award for best Regional Professional Theatre. The department emails the students with multiple opportunities to audition in-between their on-campus commitments. Additionally, their teachers provide the resources to apply and audition for out of area summer stock professional theater and encourages the students to work with them on their audition material.

Almost every semester there is an on-campus master class or a professional who comes in to give industry advice. While there are alumni on Broadway, students also easily end up in national tours and professional regional theatre. The department is supportive of students who have school schedule conflicts for professional auditions or work on national tours that may overlap. Students and professors come and support their fellow students in the regional professional theatre scene. Many motivated students have graduated with enough EMC points to go equity, if they desire.

Hi everyone, longtime lurker here finally posting. A1s prescreens question

Hello cc family - I am hoping that someone here can shed some light on what the in-person prescreen process looks like for A1s? My D submitted her application and requested the "New York City Pre Screen #1" which is now listed as being September 17th and 18th (unfortunately, when she submitted her application they didn't have the dates listed or she would have chosen the 2nd prescreen option :( ). Do they just get an appointment time for one of those two days? I assume it's not an all day event? There is just no information about what the prescreen process looks like on their website... thanks in advance!
