Rider MT vs Roosevelt CCPA MT Voice Emphasis

My S is having a very difficult time deciding between these two programs. Are there any current students/parents that can shed any light on each program? What is the typical day like for a freshman? How many days a week do you have acting/dance classes and how long are the classes? What percentage of students are involved in summer stock? Do any theatres come to campus to audition students? Any other important points to note? Thank you!

LIU Post's MT Program?

I recently got accepted to LIU Post's musical theatre program after my walk-in audition at NYC Unifieds! It was my most enjoyable audition yet, and I felt like the students and admissions people who were there were all very close and very excited about the school! Many other kids that I talked to who had auditioned also commented that they felt like the auditor was very interested them as a unique individual, and I would agree with that. The auditor was actually the only one I have met who actually stood up and shook my hand before I started! I'm interested in the program, but I don't know much about it! Does anyone here feel like they could give an overview of the program or even share their opinions about it?

Big List of MT Colleges: By State

MODERATOR NOTE: FOR THE MOST UPDATED LIST, PLEASE SEE POST #2 WHICH IS MORE COMPLETE THAN POST #1'S LIST. Here is the big list of schools that offer a musical theater degree. This list was formerly part of a FAQ MT college site that a now CC "alum", Shauna, had compiled as a Geocities site that CC posted a link to at the top of our MT Forum. As the Geocities site is no longer available and is discontinued by Yahoo, CC is posting this valuable resource of the list of MT Colleges that was formerly compiled. As Shauna wrote on her original Geocities site, this list was made in large part by Dancersmom and doctorjohn, two CC members, and although pretty much everyone on the board has contributed at some point, these two did the vast majority of the work. (Thanks also to ILMomsk, Lauren Z., Nick, klass, Lexasmom, Mary Anne, and MusThCC for updates.) The list begins with colleges that offer undergraduate musical theater degrees. They are organized alphabetically by state. Following the name of the school in parentheses is the type of degree they offer, and, in some cases, the number of students the school offers admission to. Colleges that offer graduate degrees are at the bottom of the page. If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, please let us know. KEY: A + next to a school indicates that they are especially selective (that they admit only a small number of applicants). A ~ next to a school indicates that they are non-audition (that they do not require an audition to major in musical theater). Schools without this mark do require an audition. What are My Chances of getting into a Musical theatre program next year Honest Opinion?

After 1 year of being a BA theatre major(basically being a 2nd class citizen to the BFA Acting and Musical theatre majors) at my college as a freshmen, I've decided to take a gap year next year to get ready for auditions for Musical theater in jan, feb and march 2018. after not really noticing it my first 17 years of my life, I found the world of theater when I was a junior in high school and fell in love with it instantly and decided to major in it. I just started singing in a musical theater class at my college this year and during the class my passionate professor made me want to do musical theater as a career and my iPhone has been full of cast recording ever since september 2016. I'm new to singing and honestly my voice needs help(but have gotten better with lifting my soft pallate) but I need to work on alot of things like tone, breathing, belting without constriction it sounds like mickey mouse when I try to do it sometimes, I have problems singing with a breathy voice sometimes, I need more resonance, I kinda fixed my nasal sound quality lol, I mostly need to learn how to belt because there is alot of that in the musical theatre songs I choose. I know I have alot to work on in terms of my voice, But I know I can get better before these auditions for musical theatre next year and I'm planning on doing everything in my power to get into a musical theatre program next year, to getting quality voice lessons to help me, an audition coach probably Mary Anna Denard( I've emailed her), Dance classes consisting of ballet, jazz and tap ,auditioning for local plays and musicals ,taking piano lessons to help me with music theory, Acting is the strongest out of all 3 and the other 2 o loare at a beginning level. It would be easier for me to get into an acting program but I just see musical theatre performances at the local theaters and colleges and at the tonys and I see the amazing musical numbers with all the extraordinary dancing and singing and I just want to be able to do that I know its going to be a hard and long road but I have just got to try. I dont know How I'm going to pay for all this lol, My parents aren't in my life that much and I live with my aunt and she barely makes over $20,000 a year, I'm planning on working 30 hours a week during this gap year and maybe even taking out loans to pay for the college audition coach help. Im also planning on auditioning at at more than 15 BFA programs making a smart list with some reach schools. Male, African American, 5'8", 160Ibs, Untrained Tenor Voice @itzseansimpson on instagram or twitter if you can find me I have a jean jacket on on my profile pic, to get a better look at me I know this was long but Thanks to anyone for reading this and hopefully responding ,it means alot to me

are MT actors shut out of plays?

I found out a pretty good article about acting for MT actors, saying that acting has been taken as the extra - the least important - of the 3 main core MT disciplines. "Many musical theatre students get only a ‘smattering’ in acting – a general short course in the basics". Even an actress says that she regrets not having enough acting courses at college. After reading this article I can relate it to a lot of US Colleges programs with enphasis in acting, dancing, singing. Carnegie Mellon has an emphasis in acting, for example, they even do not have a dancing audition, and their students do great not being necessarily great dancers. So far I ask myself how important are these acting techniques for MT actors such as Stanivlasky, Meisner, Hagen, Suzuki, Viewpoints because even after college these techniques improve the acting skills of an actor. After studing these 3 disciplines I can say that it all depends on what you want and the career path that you want to take. Double Majoring with MT ~ A correction by my kid ;)

After hearing me say the "wrong" thing the other day for the zillionth time, my Rider grad corrected me the other day and I thought it was worth mentioning here. When you do a BFA MT and "double-major" you're actually a DUAL DEGREE student. In his case, it was BFA MT and BA Arts Administration. So not only are you meeting the reqs for 4-year BFA curriculum, but trying to fit in a BA curriculum as well. Son tells me this is important distinction that shouldn't be overlooked, since that means figuring out the BA gen-eds (hence the need for online courses and/or APs/IBs) to crowbar those in. In his case, the reward was actually two diplomas on the wall. But it's a lot of work. So there ya go -- DUAL DEGREE students, not DOUBLE MAJORS if we're talking BFA+BA route. (Also, it's still me, aka @MTTwinsinCA, for some reason I cannot login to that account...)

Hi - my son has been accepted to a few programs for MT/theatre and I wanted to hear pros & cons that may help with the final decision. He is looking for a program that is highly focused in performance and less academic. He has 8 years acting training, 5 years private vocal - classical, little dance training. He is strongest in voice, then acting, little dance (he is not a triple threat). He attends a performing arts hs and has had the leads for the past 3 years. He is a very hard worker and wants a very challenging program that will make you work hard. He's a serious kid with little patience for fooling around when it comes to performance. Accepted: UArts - BFA MT Baldwin Wallace - BA Theatre Point Park - BA Theatre Shenandoah - BM Vocal Performance Rider - BA Theatre Waiting to hear from: Montclair - BFA MT Hartt - BFA MT Boston Conservatory - BFA MT

What Musical Theatre Colleges Should I consider?

Helly, I'm a 17 year old Korean American Junior in highschool, class of 2018. I love musical theatre and want to get into the field in college despite my parents not wanting me to since it's not a steady job, however I love singing and I don't care if it means working as a waitress for the rest of my life. I have a 3.0 GPA because of two F's I got during my sophmore year where I was struggling with depression and family issues but my grades are now back on track. I am taking the SAT this June and ACT probably this August. My PSAT score was a 1190(Not great but it was my first PSAT and I am currently taking SAT Courses). I've been in a church/christian choir since I was 8, school choir for 3 years so far in highschool and have no dance experience(which is terrible I know ;-;) I only discovered my passion for musical theatre during my sophmore year and plan on auditioning for my school's musical theatre in the beginning of my senior year. I need help in finding a list of colleges with a good musical theatre program that offers a BFA. My top schools have been Ithaca College, Juilliard, and Berkelee but I feel as though my chances are not high in those for musical theatre(ESPECIALLY ITHACA AND JUILLIARD PHEW) I live in California so UC Irvine seemed like a good choice except they offer a BA and my gpa isn't enough to get into Irvine without two years of community college, which I am open to except I don't know if I want to go to Irvine. Can people recommened me potential schools that offer a BFA in musical theatre. I am willing to go anywhere and location of the college doesn't matter to me ^^. Thank you guys so much :).

I'm looking for feedback on anyone's experiences who auditioned with any of the following schools: UCLA, SDSU, ASU, Arizona, UNColorado, CCM and Utah. Any memorable details about how the audition ran, curve balls, or notable impressions you may have had if you visited the campus/program. Feel free to reply here or DM me here if you prefer. Thank you in advance.

Standardizing college theatre / musical theatre auditions

$

Over the years, we've had many discussions about standardizing the process of MT/Acting auditions for college on these boards, and it appears there is some discussion about this by MT educators. (Most recently this was discussed extensively starting with post #4365 on page 291 of the thread called “Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)”. In any case, while I cannot post a link here, there is a blog on Huff Po right now entitled "Stressed Out! The College Audition Quagmire" by Mary Anna Dennard interviewing Sherri Sanders on just that subject. Sanders is involved with Music Theatre Educators Association (MTEA) and she is trying to spearhead efforts to do just that. Sounds like a longer-term effort, but she's very passionate about it. Google the title of the article and you'll find it easily.

Happy Decision Day, all. I thought that since my D's decision is to take one more year to prepare, improve, form a better list-I would start a thread for any students/parents who are doing the same. I would be grateful to lean on, learn from, vent to, share resources with, etc. Anyone?

The Performing Arts Project (TPAP) Question?

$

0
Hi! I have a question about TPAP, for anyone who knows people who have attended. I've heard so many great things about it, but I didn't know if the people who say that are referring to the 3 week program (Panorama), or the 2 week program (Blueprint). I'm a 17 year old current junior, and I would love to further my technique and training with an advanced/rigorous program. I am definitely on a budget, though. I've already digitally applied to TPAP, but I'm just trying to figure out which program I could do. I noticed on the website, that the 2 week program offers less classes than the 3 week, which has many electives you can choose from. So, I just wanted to make sure the 2 week program was still just as good, or if the hype TPAP receives is only for the 3 week program. If it is mainly Panorama that people really love and seem to grow from, I'll try to find a way to help finance that with my family. But, if the 2 week program is just as revolutionary too, then I know I'm good to go. Basically, I'm just wondering if the 2 week program is still worth it, because its very important to me. Hope this makes sense and thank you!

Michael Feinstein's Songbook Academy in Carmel, Indiana

OK this is a total plug for this competition, but my daughter attended twice and other MT kids would get so much out of it. https://www.thecenterfortheperformingarts.org/Great-American-Songbook-Inititative/Annual-Competition To apply, you send in two songs from the Great American Songbook- pretty much all pre-1965 MT songs can be used. They pick 40 kids from around the country. Almost all of the 40 kids that are selected are musical theatre geeks. So, they all really get along and are supportive of each other, even though it is a competition. During the week, they have wonderful workshops with great instructors and there are always a few Broadway actors. My daughter's first year, Laura Osnes came to give them a workshop. This year, it was Jarod Spector and also Janis Siegel from The Manhattan Transfer. My daughter got to do an improve call and response duet scat with her- cool! The older kids that my daughter has met there are now all in college MT programs so she knows people at PACE, CMU, Rider, Montclair, UM, Texas, Marymount...etc. And, the winner of the Songbook Academy from three years ago, Maddie Ballio, was the girl selected to be Tracey in Hairspray Live. Go Maddie!! To top it all off, Michael Feinstein who started the program works with the kids and he is the absolute best. He is a consummate performer and they learn so much from him. When he was performing in our area last year, the Songbook Academy contacted my daughter to ask if she would like to perform a song in one of his shows. She did and it was the thrill of her life (so far) and it looks great on her college resume...just saying. Michael tries to have the songbook kids perform with him as much as he can. How awesome is that? Plus, the kids learn all about the songs from the Great American Songbook and how to interpret and perform them. This is the purpose of the whole thing; to keep these songs going with the younger generation. My daughter was a top 10 finalist this summer. She got to perform her two songs in the beautiful concert hall in Carmel in front of a sold out audience. Being a finalist, she can't go again, but she wishes that she could go for a third time. THIS PROGRAM IS FANTASTIC!
