MT Summer Programs in NY

$

0
I'm an International student (18 y/o) who's looking to start a career in musical theatre in my country. Next summer I'll get the awesome opportunity to go to NY so I can study MT and get to know the city a little.

I've already looked into some programs (AADA, Wagner SMTI and IAMT are my top picks for now) and I'd like to know personal experiences if anyone has them, but I'm very open to suggestions! I want the unbiased truth since it's very hard to get a clear view of what the programs are when you don't really have enough knowledge about the institutions.

So, to sum up what I'm looking for it would be: a good program, that isn't super expensive and would cover mostly all the bases (singing, dancing, acting), that lasts something between 2-4 weeks. Nothing too geared for college prep since I (unfortunately) don't have the means to go to college in the US and hopefully something that would either give me some downtime to explore NY and attend Broadway shows or has that in the program itself. Housing would be a very big plus too since I'll be going alone.

Any help would be really appreciated because this is a HUGE dream of mine and I really want to get this right.

Big List of MT Colleges: By State

MODERATOR NOTE: FOR THE MOST UPDATED LIST, PLEASE SEE POST #2 WHICH IS MORE COMPLETE THAN POST #1'S LIST.

Here is the big list of schools that offer a musical theater degree. This list was formerly part of a FAQ MT college site that a now CC "alum", Shauna, had compiled as a Geocities site that CC posted a link to at the top of our MT Forum. As the Geocities site is no longer available and is discontinued by Yahoo, CC is posting this valuable resource of the list of MT Colleges that was formerly compiled.

As Shauna wrote on her original Geocities site, this list was made in large part by Dancersmom and doctorjohn, two CC members, and although pretty much everyone on the board has contributed at some point, these two did the vast majority of the work. (Thanks also to ILMomsk, Lauren Z., Nick, klass, Lexasmom, Mary Anne, and MusThCC for updates.) The list begins with colleges that offer undergraduate musical theater degrees. They are organized alphabetically by state. Following the name of the school in parentheses is the type of degree they offer, and, in some cases, the number of students the school offers admission to.

Colleges that offer graduate degrees are at the bottom of the page.

If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, please let us know.

KEY:

A + next to a school indicates that they are especially selective (that they admit only a small number of applicants).

A ~ next to a school indicates that they are non-audition (that they do not require an audition to major in musical theater). Schools without this mark do require an audition.

Musical theatre colleges that offer non MT minors?

DD (sophomore - so we have time) attends a magnet performing arts HS, and wants to major in MT and to continue Mandarin, or possibly international relations or Asian studies as a minor. She's got three yrs of middle school Chinese, in her 2nd yr of HS Chinese, did an intensive language immersion camp over the summer, and will return to the camp next summer. Just starting the college process -- looks like UMich is a non conservatory that allows MT majors to minor in the LSA, but realize this is the Holy Grail for MT majors and is a cr@pshoot. Marymount Manhattan allows minors as well and they have one in Asian Studies which she is interested in. Any others that you can suggest?

There is not a lot of discussion about Texas Christian University’s BFA MT in this forum even though it's on the big list, so I thought that I would contribute now that my daughter is a freshman. Most information will be factual; however, we did interview close to 8-10 current students and alumni in the program before making a decision, so I will include some of their input if there was a strong consensus. My hope is to paint a picture of the program and university for you to decide if it is a match for your student.

LOCATION: TCU sits about 5 miles south from downtown Fort Worth. FW is a charming, historic city with a strong economy, lively nightlife and vibrant theatre scene. It is 30 minutes to Dallas and there are two accessible airports (DFW 30 minutes, Dallas Love, 45 minutes), giving a student a lot of options for flights. It is also a relatively milder climate than some other MT school options. Restaurants, Uber, upscale and mall shopping, as well as culture are nearby. There are a few restaurants and other basic needs within campus walking distance.

CAMPUS SETTING & ENVIRONMENT: It is a stunning 290-acre, park-like campus in a residential neighborhood. The campus makes a lot of the top rankings for its beautiful facilities and reflects a well-funded private university. The maintenance and amenities are exceptional and their top-rated dorms are continually being renovated as well as their state-of-the-art Rec Center. Additionally, their outstanding football stadium, sports facilities and academic buildings are continually being upgraded.

MT PROGRAM SIZE & ENVIRONMENT: There are 43 total students enrolled as BFA MT majors within the entire 4-year conservatory-style program and 33 total students in BFA Acting. My D’s Freshman MT class is 12 students, with a balanced male/female ratio. The smaller program was enticing to her because of the personal attention by faculty and more performance opportunities.

ACTING: The MT program is under the School of Theatre and my D and I have been very impressed with the 4 performances we have seen combined. The faculty has experience in the local professional theatre scene as well as Broadway experience; every summer they run a Shakespeare Festival on campus with professionals and students in the cast. OnStage Blog rated TCU #6 in the country this year for BFA MT programs.

DANCE: There is leveled dance class offerings that rotates each semester in the MT department. My D took advanced tap this semester and will take advanced jazz next semester. There is also opportunity to take classes in their top-ranked dance department, but you do have to audition into some. My D’s schedule is full with 18 units, so she has chosen to take dance in an outside studio for her first year because it works and the price was reasonable. The professional studio is close to campus so she is perfectly happy with this arrangement. I have been told by upperclassmen and alumni that the BFA schedule opens up more after the first year to fit more dance from the dance department.

SINGING: My D currently takes ½ hour private voice lessons through the School of Music each week, which is offered for MT majors all four years. She had extensive voice training prior to college, so the ½ hour is sufficient for her. It is possible to take one hour lessons as you progress into the upperclassmen curriculum. They also have MT Performance Lab twice a week, which incorporates singing and acting.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES: First, there are eight on-campus performance opportunities each year, two of which are musicals. Every other year they perform their musical at a larger, regional theatre in town. Additionally, they do the same thing for one of their plays. Freshman are often cast their first year and the smaller program size allows a reasonable opportunity to be cast every semester of their four year program. Students report fair casting in the program and honest feedback during this process,

CAREER DEVELOPMENT/PROFESSIONAL EXPOSURE/ALUMNI. TCU has great accessibility to professional experience for your resume by the time you graduate in order to build a network of references. According to rankings, DFW is the 4th largest theatre market in the country. While on-campus performances take precedence, there are at least 5 equity theatres in the DFW area that are well respected and known in the industry. Dallas Theatre Center won the 2017 Tony Award for best Regional Professional Theatre. The department emails the students with multiple opportunities to audition in-between their on-campus commitments. Additionally, their teachers provide the resources to apply and audition for out of area summer stock professional theater and encourages the students to work with them on their audition material.

Almost every semester there is an on-campus master class or a professional who comes in to give industry advice. While there are alumni on Broadway, students also easily end up in national tours and professional regional theatre. The department is supportive of students who have school schedule conflicts for professional auditions or work on national tours that may overlap. Students and professors come and support their fellow students in the regional professional theatre scene. Many motivated students have graduated with enough EMC points to go equity, if they desire.

Question about ED2 and choosing audition dates

$

I have heard a lot about applying early to get an audition date, but I am curious about how that might work with selecting ED2 as an application option. My child wants to apply to a bunch of prescreen schools, but if by November the results are not amazing, may want to apply ED2 to a school. But in order to do that and still get an audition date did the choice need to have been made in October? Can you switch your application from regular to ED2 or is ED2 not really an option unless you are 100% sure now?

Jitters

My daughter is getting the last minute jitters and now is doubting that she has what it takes. She is afraid to submit her prescreens and is giving up before it starts. I think she wants it so badly that she is psyching herself out. Any advise or any words of wisdom?

A1s prescreens question

Hello cc family - I am hoping that someone here can shed some light on what the in-person prescreen process looks like for A1s? My D submitted her application and requested the "New York City Pre Screen #1" which is now listed as being September 17th and 18th (unfortunately, when she submitted her application they didn't have the dates listed or she would have chosen the 2nd prescreen option :( ). Do they just get an appointment time for one of those two days? I assume it's not an all day event? There is just no information about what the prescreen process looks like on their website... thanks in advance!

Wild Card (optional)...is it actually optional?

$

For most of my child's schools the Wild Card is listed as optional and they would prefer not to submit one. I am just curious if this would be recommended even if optional. TBH the wildcard video is not their strongest because it was very challenging to come up with a special skill that was not singing, dancing and acting!!

Pre-Screen Time Limit Question

$

When submitting my pre-screens, I did them very early back when slates were not included in the time limit. Because of the new common pre-screen, the guidelines state:

"This time limit includes the slate at the beginning of the piece and is strictly adhered to; please do not upload media files longer than 90 seconds."

My college coach informed me to submit them anyway, but I am worried that I will not pass pre-screens, especially for some of my top-choice competitive colleges, like Elon. However, I don't want to re-record everything. Will it be okay if I go eight or so seconds over the time limit? Will it harm my chances of passing?

Talented Musical Theater daughter with great academic grades

My daughter loves musical theater, is a super trained vocalist and she also has great academic grades (1400 SAT). She wants to do musical theater but does not have the dance training to pull off an audition. She is considering going in undecided to a school but wants to either get an MT minor or double major somehow with MT and maybe Psychology? I am afraid of her majoring in MT and not being employable after school and wasting her good academic record. Finances are also an issue, so schools like NYU Tisch are not an option. I think I am looking for a needle in a haystack, but is there a school that she could get money from that has allows/encourages double majoring or or MT minoring?

SCAD - Any insights

Not a lot about SCAD on CC. D was just accepted. I'm a little confused as it appears to be a BFA (Performing Arts) program without an audition (makes me leary). Auditions are used for artistic scholarships if I'm reading the website correctly.

They don't have a true Musical Theater BFA but they do have a Performing Arts (focus on stage and screen acting) which can be combined with a Vocal Performance minor.

Based on their site they have lots of success placing kids in several medium and are highly rated by the industry rags.

Any CCers with actual SCAD experience or real knowledge? Appreciate your thoughts.

(first of many schools to consider but D is excited she was already accepted - signed up for an on campus audition to serve as her portfolio review)

Should I Apply for MT Major?

$

I wanted to know if I should apply for a MT major, or just stay with art. I don’t know how to dance or really act, and I can sing kind of well, but I don’t think any college will accept that. My high school also doesn’t have a drama club because we don’t have an auditorium. Should I just stick with art as a future major?

Prescreen Lessons Learned

Well, I'm a long time lurker who is now eyeball deep! As many of us have just wrapped up this fun step, let's share lessons learned for the future while it's still fresh in our heads! Here are a few of mine:

*Do make a pact if you're helping with this step (and all of it generally). We've had a lot of training doing dance competition life for years - that we won't yell and will be patient or else it isn't fun or worth it - so we generally get along under crazy circumstances. This training helped a lot! Do have snacks, water, throat coat tea for this part (and all of it really). Best role of parent is cheerleader and supporter, and witholding negative comments for our sensitive artists! I gave her a lot of space to do what she needed and she has a good sense of whether she did what she is capable of. I also left the room for monologues to ensure she was comfortable.

*Do test your outfits on camera, in the space you're filming if possible, and on your phone and full laptop screen. How do I know this? We filmed everything, came home and it didn't look great on the laptop, we could see a bra that wasn't visible on an iphone screen and other issues. So we went back and refilmed it again with a new outfit (late late night run to Target). So the next time we filmed a few, uploaded to laptop and I watched them (she won't watch herself) through before moving on. Drop Box was excellent for allowing quick uploads between devices for this reason. Dance was filmed separately on a different date. Overall, it took about 3 weekends to get it all done, so give yourself a cushion (we had planned 2 weeks, but her sibling got sick and we had to cancel, you just never know!). You'll also want plenty of time to watch, edit and review, and allow for ample upload time.

*We wrote out all the requirements for every college (which songs, which shot - chest up, knees up, full body etc), then consolidated by like requirements to see the total number of shots we needed, this helped tremendously. Even then I missed a requirement (to slate for dance for Michigan). Plus a couple schools wanted intro videos so need to prep what to say.

*We needed 3 monologues - 2 contemp, 1 Shakespeare; 3 songs - 2 contemp, 1 classic (pre 1965 (Common Prescreen says 1970, Michigan says 1965 so we used that just in case) - some schools allow 2 contemp and that may be a better fit for your kid. 1 60 second dance, 2 separate choreographed dances for schools that don't do in person dance calls and 1 ballet across the floor. This helps with planning at the outset.

*When ending a monologue, song or dance, ensure they hold or follow through for another 2 seconds - or an 8 count so you don't have to cut off the video abruptly at the end. A couple times my kid would crack a smile or joke too early and we had to reshoot it.

*Depending on your list, a few schools require MP4 format vs MOV, which is the iphone format. Converting files can take a LONG TIME and we had to pay for online conversion for large files. Building in time for this is important.

*We upgraded our wifi to the Google Mesh and it helped with uploading tremendously- it was a game changer.

Best of luck to everyone still filming, uploading, editing, submitting and to next year's class!

Do Essays Matter?

$

Okay, now I know this question is rudimentary and can be answered quickly. Of course they matter! And I know that. But while going through this process, I’ve realized that I am applying to 16 schools and I have about 23 essays to write. I’ve written around 8, but on top of school work, that’s just a lot of work! And I want to know how much they play into admission.
Basically, my question how much are they weighted in decisions? If you have a really great audition at a school you wrote a mediocre essay for, will they reject you for your essay? Similarly, if you had a mediocre audition at a place you wrote a great essay for, will your essay give you a slight advantage in your admission process? Do essays for schools like USC, Michigan, and Boston (academically competitive schools) matter more than essays for schools like Carnegie Mellon, CCM, and Baldwin Wallace? (Conservatories/Less focused on academics) Please let me know your thoughts on this!

I know this is a regional type event but I am wondering if it is worth attending to just get out the nerves and get some experience? Do any schools actually accept students at this event? Any feedback would be great as I am considering since we live within a few hours drive.
