Headshot Questions

$

0
I know there are past articles about headshots, but I also know that trends and taste change often, so I thought I would ask again to get a fresh take.

Obviously, electronic submissions of headshots is fairly simple - however, physical headshots in auditions is where I have my questions

I really only have 2 questions:

1. Is a Landscape/Horizontal Headshot a no-no? Our best headshot is a landscape picture and does not work as well cropped for a good portrait/vertical look. Not sure if this is something colleges frown on.

2. Border or no Border? Is a border with name necessary? Is a full border, or perhaps a bottom only 'footer' style border the way to go? Forget the border/name thing entirely?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Prescreen before submitting application

Most of the universities that require pre-screens seem to want prospective students to submit their application first or in conjunction with their prescreen. The less common route is encouraging prospective students to submit the prescreen first, wait to learn the outcome of the prescreen before moving forward with the application; I know that Otterbein University does the latter; which other universities, colleges or conservatories also do this?

Thank you, in advance, for sharing the names of schools that encourage applicants to submit prescreen first and then apply if they pass the prescreen (besides Otterbein).

Non Common App school applications

Given the horrendous odds of getting into a music(al) theater program, and my D's hell-bent determination to do so, she'll be applying to over 20 schools. Since the Common App maintains a 20 school limitation, what programs did you (or your sons or daughters) apply to NOT using the Common App (i.e., either the school's proprietary application or the coalition app was used instead).

Thanks for your suggestions on schools that don't require the Common App for MT applicants.

College Light Opera Company (CLOC) for summer, auditions open now

Located in Falmouth, MA. The company takes young people who are 18 by June, mostly college and grad school aged. They usually do two Gilbert and Sullivans, and the rest Broadway-type musicals. Free room and board, but no stipend for musical theater performers. A very intense experience. They also take musicians, tech people, set design/builders, box office. Musicians get a $1500 stipend - I assume they pay the box office, tech and set building staff.

Waitlist Decision Updates

Hi all! I was waitlisted for this year's A1 conference and wanted to know of any updates about the waitlist. Has anyone heard anything? Also, does anyone know the chances of getting off the waitlist?

A1 Conference - the new workshops

My S just got a rejection e-mail, but they gave an option to still attend the conference. He still gets to sing for the theatres and it seems like New York City casting directors, agents, and very fancy Broadway actors. They have classes with Beetlejuice and Mean Girls choreographers and a bunch more which he's excited about because he's perfect for those shows.

He's a senior and they mentioned catering companies hiring college students from the A1s when they move to New York City and a big discount on headshots. For 95 dollars it seems like a steal, and too good to be true at this price. We've done enough of the summer camps and intensives and they are very expensive. Has anyone attended the conference before in this capacity? I am thinking of signing up my D in high school as well. Does anyone know if there's an age limit?

Hidden Gems for BFA MT - Class of 2024

Just wanted to suggest a program for anyone looking for a good BFA MT school. West Virginia University is definitely a hidden gem. My daughter auditioned last winter and is now a BFA MT major there. They audition about 200-250 each year and my daughter's Freshman class has 14. So, it is selective and it is a great program with a growing reputation.

A1 audition conference. Daughter auditioning in NYC this weekend. Paid a hefty fee but thought that at least she'd get a private coaching as promised. But the coaching slots are all full and there are only like 15-20 slots. Really bummed. And annoyed.

Prescreen Rejection Worries

Hi all. I’m in the midst of hearing back from all of my prescreens and I’m panicking a little bit. So far I’ve heard back from 6: 2 have been yes’s, 3 have been no’s, and 1 was a redirect to acting. I worked endlessly on my material and felt extremely confident submitting them, so the results are worrying and I’m starting to worry that I might not get into a program. I was looking at the prescreen results thread and it seems that most everyone is getting mostly passes. Are prescreen rejections as common as everyone says they are? Are they an indicator of success during the audition season? I might be worrying myself for no reason, since I still have 7 prescreens to hear back from, but the results this far are making me very nervous.

Could some of you who's kids got to do A1 auditions in the past share some tips and advice? How does the actual audition day work? What to be prepared for? What to bring? How to handle the entire process? Anything else you wish you knew before... TYVM!

Summer Program Before Junior Year?

$

Is it necessary/worthwhile to do a summer program before your junior year? I’m wondering if it would instead be more beneficial for me to get a summer job and do a community theater show this summer and save up money so that going to a summer program the summer into my senior year could be less of a financial burden for my parents approaching the audition season. But I also guess it would be more impressive to have two summer programs on my resume and it would be a great learning experience to attend two different programs. What do you think?

College Musical Theatre: Walk-ins at Unifieds?

Hi! My daughter will be attending Unifieds in New York City this January, and she is very eager to do walk-ins as extra audition experience. I know some schools may fill up faster than others, so which schools would everyone recommend for a good audition experience-and possible availability? Thank you!

Musical theatre colleges that offer non MT minors?

DD (sophomore - so we have time) attends a magnet performing arts HS, and wants to major in MT and to continue Mandarin, or possibly international relations or Asian studies as a minor. She's got three yrs of middle school Chinese, in her 2nd yr of HS Chinese, did an intensive language immersion camp over the summer, and will return to the camp next summer. Just starting the college process -- looks like UMich is a non conservatory that allows MT majors to minor in the LSA, but realize this is the Holy Grail for MT majors and is a cr@pshoot. Marymount Manhattan allows minors as well and they have one in Asian Studies which she is interested in. Any others that you can suggest?

Found a useful podcast!

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but don't feel like I have seen any discussions of this on these forums and I think it's well worth mentioning. "Processing the Process: Auditioning for College Musical Theatre Programs, A Parent’s Perspective" is a podcast I stumbled upon that contains some very useful info, not to mention some very heartfelt discussions of what a lot of parents are no doubt currently going through. The host, Lisa Thams, has been through the college audition process twice, with two sons a few years apart, and with quite different journeys. She really knows of what she speaks, and she's not afraid to go deep on both the highs and lows, and how demanding the process can be on families. Well worth your time, IMHO, and I think most of the info contained therein would apply just as well to Acting programs as to MT ones.
For some reason, it's quite tricky to find when searching on Apple Podcasts (not sure on other platforms). Make sure you search Processing the Process + Lisa Thams and you should find it. You can also Google it that way. I'll try and paste a link below but not sure if that's allowed ... Again, apologies if this is old news to you all, but maybe worth a revisit at this time of year anyway, as in the last few months she's had episodes interviewing her two sons, which is a nice upbeat reminder that good things will eventually come for all, if you just, as they say, "trust the process."

And not sure if she ever was or still is a CCer, but if so, "Job well done!" Lisa Thams. :-)

Master List of "Unified Audition" Schools

Since there is no website showing all of the Performing Arts schools that audition over "Unified" weekends I thought I'd start a thread that can be updated and hopefully pinned for future reference. This is an initial list from my limited experience to be updated by the CC "hive mind".

I put only the basics so as to make this easy to read: School Name, Unified location, Is it an official "Unified" school and have CC members reported that walk-ins have been available recently. When you correct/update the list please copy the whole thing and re-post it with changes so the most recent post can be used for reference.

In case it's not clear NY - New York, CH - Chicago, LA = Los Angeles. ;)
