Does anyone have first-hand insight into the BFA MT program at Missouri State? My D has some hard decisions to make. We'd love to hear from an insider. I know it's a new program, but we were impressed when she auditioned.

Live Audition Curveballs

I read on another board about an applicant being asked during his/her live audition to sing a song from one of the shows listed on his/her resume. This got me thinking about other requests from auditioners outside the normal "can you sing a pop/other contemporary/etc. song from your rep" type questions. Any of your kids experience this and if so what were the requests? No need to be school specific, just wanting to prep my junior daughter for what she might expect. Thanks!

Missouri State MT April 1 decision???

Hey all you knowledge people. Quick question about Missouri State MT. My niece has been accepted academically and artistically, however, she was notified today she had to make a decision by 4/1 or lose her spot. What’s up with that? Thought National College Decision Day was May 1? She still has an audition 4/30 at UCF and is still waiting on 5-6 decisions and aid packages. Can they really do that?

Missouri State Admitted Students Day

@4angels and @collegeboundSam these are my observations and not opinions weighting the program either for or against. We were there for the university wide event - so not specific to MT. Re travel to and from- it is difficult and expensive to fly in and out of Springfield but easy to drive around the Springfield area. One student said that kids who fly home will usually catch rides with kids who live in Kansas City or St Louis and fly out of those airports
Re the campus- it is relatively compact for a large university The athletic facilities seemed nice. We spent the majority of our time at the Student Union which has chick fil a , either papa johns or dominos ( I can’t remember which), and a Subway, and a Grill/ healthier option that I have never heard of Downstairs they have a bowling alley/ping pong/pool room that was great. They also have a small grocery shop, gift store/clothing store and a copy center there. Lots of areas to sit/lounge and at 7pm on a Saturday we did see two groups in the student union - 4 girls working on a project and 8 kids playing cards. We did not do the dorm tour although they all seem pretty conveniently located. We did go over to Craig Hall where the theatre is located ( it wasn’t included on our regular tour ). The doors into the theatre were locked so we could not see the theatre but the lobby was big and we were able to look at the headshots of all the kids who had done the LA/New York Showcase. Their headshots were amazing! We went in search of kids hanging out ( because that’s what theatre kids do ) and found some on the second floor in the very small black box. They were mostly acting majors ( no MTs) and an English major. They talked to S for a few minutes. They were working on a one act We saw the big concrete pad where the tent theatre will go up. Parking was easy. As a matter of observation- there were lots of empty parking lots

We met with Mr Westenberg for a small breakout type session. Here’s where it will be hard just to give my observations and not my opinions because he is so enigmatic, enthusiastic and passionate it is hard not to fall in love with him instantaneously. Even as I am trying to reign my words in, I really just want to gush about him. He believes that everyone he has made an offer to can make it in this business and he wants to develop that and provide opportunity Freshman can’t audition for the first semester shows because they are cast the semester before. He highly recommends AP/dual enrollment/online summer coursework to open up schedule for more options in theatre coursework Several kids minor (one was asking about dance minor) one of the students there was a religious studies dance minor They have two very interesting opportunities that are by audition. One goes to schools in the Springfield area and does short plays/musicals for them and teaches them how to be an audience ( some very low income schools have no exposure to arts) another group creates shows that handle tough topics ( sexual harassment, sexual discrimination, etc ) and presents them as short skits to corporations, fraternities, etc making it fun and less awkward. They are taking 20 this year They have started a Musical Theory for Musical Theatre students ( I personally love this because not all MT students play an instrument and have had theory -so it helps to give kids a fair shake in a tough music based curriculum subject ). Student MUST get a C ( not a C-) in all Theatre subjects Senior Showcase is by audition. Some kids will get the opportunity to work for the Tent Theatre and thereby start earning equity points before they have graduated.

switching from Classical Voice to MT, need advice

Posting for my daughter, will tell her about this board just found. Daughter is lyric soprano (with good strong chest voice), doesn't belt. Experience in high school musicals and with show choir (simple jazz dancing), as well as Irish step dancing when real little. She wants to switch to either a combo program like Illinois's lyric theatre, or a program with good vocal teaching and coaching. Want to stay in middle plains states (base now is Missouri), would consider mid-south (TN, OK), or SE (strong ties to Florida, gets in state tuition there as well).

Her vocals are amazing for her age, 19. Would have a great career in Classical were she to continue, but she LOVES MT and says although she's great at Classical, she doesn't love doing it.

I would love program suggestions as she needs to "step on it" to get apps and/or pre-screens in. What programs to avoid (ie, lack of good vocal teaching/coaches/overly dance focus, or will force her to try and belt; she should stay lyric/legit, it's her strength and will get her the jobs in the future).

What programs would be good for her? (And we don't want a program that only mounts one musical a year because the strength is dance, but given time constraints and how new this is to us, need help.)

She will have four semesters of voice, theory, piano and tons of GE classes including foreign languages, so is already well-geared for a BM type MT program.

Thanks for any and all help!!! :)

Looking for Meaty College Audition Monologues

So I'm trying to find some good college audition monologues, but my predicament is that a lot of the roles that suit my strengths as a performer are mature, domineering women (like Rose in Gypsy). Seeing as they want age-appropriate material for college auditions, I've had a hard time finding meaty-er monologues that I could use. Have you come across any meaty monologues for younger women that would work for college auditions?

I recently got accepted to Georgia state and received a scholarship that fully covers my out of state tuition and instead allows me to pay in state tuition. Does anyone know when their full financial aid packages come out and are they uploaded on the application portal or do they send you an email letting you know?

The Class of 2024 - Audition Day Reviews

I notice that past years have had a forum for audition day reviews and thought it might be helpful if we started one for our class. I don't have anything to share yet but will after NYC Unifieds. It would be great to share what happened in different auditions to help others know what to possibly expect.

Working on college audition material as part of summer program

A coach was advising NOT to work on material one wants to use as part of college auditions during a summer program experience.

I'm inclined to trust the coach, but I also feel it runs counter to at least some of the advice received on these boards ... namely, that a prospective MT major should take advantage of working on their material as part of a summer program experience (whether the program is school-specific or not, i.e., multiple programs represented).

I think the coach feels the program could say "no" to a piece the applicant was really inclined to do (because of the applicant's connection to the piece, etc.) without the summer program giving much thought / feedback to the applicant as to why not do it.

Welcome advice / perspective on this conundrum.

Musical theatre programs not in top 10

Hi! Anyone out there in a musical theatre program or applying for one? What are some good schools under $30K a year that may not be in the top 10 or even top 20 but are reputable? Anyone at Montclair State, Shenandoah Conservatory or Southeast Missouri State? Any other schools offer in-state tuition for BFA students? Montclair is one I found, would love to know if there are others. We are in NC.

Hello, new MT mom of a junior here and I have been stalking this site for a while reading all of your experiences. This is so overwhelming and I thank you all. I have a D who is a stronger dancer and actor than singer. What schools/programs would you recommend for this type of performer?
