For those of you who have attended NY Unifieds in the past

For NY Unifieds, is Sunday as busy as Saturday, or is Sunday a much more "low key" day compared to Saturday?

Also, are most of the auditions on the 3rd, 4th and 12th floor of Pearl Studios at 500 8th avenue, or is there an equal amount of auditions on the 12th floor of 519 8th Avenue, the 10th, 16th, 17th floor of 520 8th Avenue (Ripley-Grier spaces) and / or other Manhattan venues?

Is there someplace that lists where all the college auditions are taking place (at NY unifieds)?

TIA!

GOOD LUCK!!

Hi!! If a school needs a song from pre-1960 and your song is from the show but it was added into the revival, is it okay to do?

Hello. My Son is a junior in high school. He had thought about acting and musical theatre as early as elementary school, however once he hit his freshman year he became undecided. Last year he decided he wants it!! He has been actively involved in Choir and Band, and Jazz Band, is familiar with auditions for his band and choral works. This year alone has had auditioned four times for those and also for the school musical. We have started to look at schools and are wondering when we should start touring and prepping. We had thought we would tour this past Fall but could not make certain times work with all of his other auditions. Are we too late to the game or is spring early enough? He is also looking into a vocal coach and some theater classes at a local youth theater. We are primarily concentrating on schools in the north east.
His NEW choir director is also a vocal, and acting coach and he is very familiar with my son and his asspirations and has truly encouraged him this past year. He worked him for last years musical, where he learned the part of George Banks in three weeks and performed amazinling, and that is not a proud mom talking, that is based on reviews throughout our community.
Please let me what we should be doing next.

Daughter has a coach and in the process of selecting her rep for pre-screens and auditions. She has a handful of summer programs to apply to. SATs in March. Let the wild ride begin!

Down to Four Choices...Need Advice

My DD has narrowed her college search down to three schools: Northern Kentucky University, Manhattan School of Music, Samford, and Austin Peay.

She was a student in the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts as a junior in high school, which guaranteed her free tuition to NKU. She also has friends there and has heard good things from them about the MT program. She auditioned for and was admitted into the BFA program. She was all set to go there and then the GSA held a College and Career Day in October, kind of like Unifieds except the students audition for all the schools at the same time. She got automatic acceptance/automatic prescreen/on-the-spot scholarships from 15 of the 24 schools that were there. That made her want to consider other schools besides NKU.

She was hoping to get to audition for CCM, but there was a problem with her prescreen not uploading correctly, and so she was not invited to audition. She has narrowed her schools down to NKU, MSM, APSU, and Samford.

Like I said, NKU has given her full tuition. She is also eligible for additional money from the Theatre Dept., plus Kentucky gives students money based on their high school grades and ACT, so she will have most, if not all, of her room and board covered.

APSU has given her a decent amount of money that will cover most of her tuition. She will have to cover the rest plus room and board. Samford gave her about half of their tuition. She is also eligible for additional Theatre Dept. scholarships from these schools, but we won't know until later in the year if she gets anything.

MSM's audition is next month. She hasn't been accepted yet, so it may not even be an issue, but if she is, there's no way we can afford the tuition, room and board without a substantial scholarship.

All this being said, I am trying to advise her to the best of my ability. I know the musical theatre world is hard to break into. Which schools would be best? I know MSM would be great being in NYC, but it's SO EXPENSIVE. I don't want her to have to worry about tens of thousands of dollars of student loan debt when she's working show to show after graduation and having to pay rent, groceries, etc.

I'm so stressed! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Search Tool to find Musical Theater Schools?

I'm an entrepreneur trying to build a tool that would help prospective students search through all the MT programs in the country. It would be a database filled with all the schools, but you could filter them based on specific unique criteria (like audition vs. non audition, study abroad programs or type of campus) I've built an outline of what I think would be helpful, but would love to run it by parents who are just starting out on this journey! Anyone up to discuss and give feedback who's just starting out? I'm not selling anything! Just want to hear whats most helpful from parents starting the journey.

We will be at unified in Chicago. Considering that there isn't much time allotted in your time slot, how much do they speak with you? What are some of the typical questions that the auditors might ask?

switching from Classical Voice to MT, need advice

Posting for my daughter, will tell her about this board just found. Daughter is lyric soprano (with good strong chest voice), doesn't belt. Experience in high school musicals and with show choir (simple jazz dancing), as well as Irish step dancing when real little. She wants to switch to either a combo program like Illinois's lyric theatre, or a program with good vocal teaching and coaching. Want to stay in middle plains states (base now is Missouri), would consider mid-south (TN, OK), or SE (strong ties to Florida, gets in state tuition there as well).

Her vocals are amazing for her age, 19. Would have a great career in Classical were she to continue, but she LOVES MT and says although she's great at Classical, she doesn't love doing it.

I would love program suggestions as she needs to "step on it" to get apps and/or pre-screens in. What programs to avoid (ie, lack of good vocal teaching/coaches/overly dance focus, or will force her to try and belt; she should stay lyric/legit, it's her strength and will get her the jobs in the future).

What programs would be good for her? (And we don't want a program that only mounts one musical a year because the strength is dance, but given time constraints and how new this is to us, need help.)

She will have four semesters of voice, theory, piano and tons of GE classes including foreign languages, so is already well-geared for a BM type MT program.

Thanks for any and all help!!! :)

Not trying to start a controversy here but I know when we talk about Top 10 Programs, we all have a slightly different list. I'm interested to see where our similarities and differences lie. I'll start with mine, in order.

1. University of Michigan
2. Carnegie Mellon
3. Cincinnati Conservatory
4. NYU
5. Boston Conservatory
6. Point Park
7. Oklahoma City
8. Penn State
9. Syracuse
10. Pace

My daughter applied to 5 of these this year along with several well respected "second tier" schools.

What's your Top 10 list??

As I read through the discussions, people mention that the schools will look for types for their college class group. What are the common/different "types" in MT?

This will kick in in earnest after Unified auditions conclude, but here it is! Hope this helps everyone get through the long months of February and March. Would a moderator like to step up to keep the list updated and post a new "big list" every week or so?

Live Audition Curveballs

I read on another board about an applicant being asked during his/her live audition to sing a song from one of the shows listed on his/her resume. This got me thinking about other requests from auditioners outside the normal "can you sing a pop/other contemporary/etc. song from your rep" type questions. Any of your kids experience this and if so what were the requests? No need to be school specific, just wanting to prep my junior daughter for what she might expect. Thanks!

I have seen a few things out there about Molloy/CAP21 and wondering if anyone out there can provide any additional details. Looks like you apply academically first then if accepted you have an audition in the spring, no prescreens.

I'm opening this discussion again, haha! I was told to expect a decision from LIU Post in January, and if not, to schedule a Unifieds slot, but I have yet to hear anything. Has anyone else heard anything or is everyone still waiting?? Just checking to see if the timeline is matching right now!! Thanks!!

Can anyone recommend a hotel near Wright State? My parents will be driving my daughter and they will be coming in from Cincinnati the evening before the audition so I'm looking for something easy and near the university.
