Big List of MT Colleges: By State

MODERATOR NOTE: FOR THE MOST UPDATED LIST, PLEASE SEE POST #2 WHICH IS MORE COMPLETE THAN POST #1'S LIST.

Here is the big list of schools that offer a musical theater degree. This list was formerly part of a FAQ MT college site that a now CC "alum", Shauna, had compiled as a Geocities site that CC posted a link to at the top of our MT Forum. As the Geocities site is no longer available and is discontinued by Yahoo, CC is posting this valuable resource of the list of MT Colleges that was formerly compiled.

As Shauna wrote on her original Geocities site, this list was made in large part by Dancersmom and doctorjohn, two CC members, and although pretty much everyone on the board has contributed at some point, these two did the vast majority of the work. (Thanks also to ILMomsk, Lauren Z., Nick, klass, Lexasmom, Mary Anne, and MusThCC for updates.) The list begins with colleges that offer undergraduate musical theater degrees. They are organized alphabetically by state. Following the name of the school in parentheses is the type of degree they offer, and, in some cases, the number of students the school offers admission to.

Colleges that offer graduate degrees are at the bottom of the page.

If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, please let us know.

KEY:

A + next to a school indicates that they are especially selective (that they admit only a small number of applicants).

A ~ next to a school indicates that they are non-audition (that they do not require an audition to major in musical theater). Schools without this mark do require an audition.

We are looking into some summer programs for my son who is a junior this year. He so far has applied to AMDA and Marymount Manhattan. He just interviewed with AMDA and will be waiting to hear. Does anyone have any thoughts on either program or any other programs in the New England, New York or New Jersey Area? Thank you.

Musical theatre programs not in top 10

Hi! Anyone out there in a musical theatre program or applying for one? What are some good schools under $30K a year that may not be in the top 10 or even top 20 but are reputable? Anyone at Montclair State, Shenandoah Conservatory or Southeast Missouri State? Any other schools offer in-state tuition for BFA students? Montclair is one I found, would love to know if there are others. We are in NC.

Falling in Love

Ever since I was a freshman, I told myself I wouldn't set my sights on one Musical Theatre program. I've known for ages how hard it is to get into a program and didn't want to fall in love with a program for the fear of having my heart broken. I've done so well...

Now, here I am. January 30, 2020. Two weeks away from my last college audition. I made it so far, but I finally auditioned on campus at a school I've been eyeing for a while. After a lot of time of keeping this school as one of my favorites and trying not to get my hopes up, I stepped onto campus and had that feeling of "this feels like home" that everyone talks about. I've done almost 15 on campus tours/auditions and haven't felt that feeling anywhere. After looking at this program for years, finally being there and auditioning was the point where it tipped and now I can't get the school out of my mind. I'm in love with the campus, faculty, students, curriculum.... everything. I'm actually panicking. I don't know what to do. It has one of the lowest acceptance rates of any of these MT programs as well. I'm so lost and horrified. I've dealt with a lot of rejection before in the arts -- it is part of auditioning. I just don't know if I'll be able to handle this one after finally feeling that it was perfect. What should I do? Please help if you have any suggestions.... Thank you so much! :)

My daughter was accepted into Boston Conservatory for the vocal performance program.. however she did not receive any type of scholarships. We are beyond thrilled as we know some people that did not get in. We are waiting on financial aid, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to make it more affordable... it is an incredible opportunity and we hate to tell her no.. thanks!

I'm opening this discussion again, haha! I was told to expect a decision from LIU Post in January, and if not, to schedule a Unifieds slot, but I have yet to hear anything. Has anyone else heard anything or is everyone still waiting?? Just checking to see if the timeline is matching right now!! Thanks!!

Can anyone recommend any outside scholarship opportunities for musical theater majors? She would also qualify for need-based. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi guys!! I just wanted to clarify... people are starting to get their LIU Post decisions today and mine said acceptance into the Theatre Arts BFA and goes on to talk about their musical theatre program and reputation. I just wanted to be sure since it doesn't explicitly say MT concentration that it is for MT? I only applied to MT! Thanks!

Financing

So my question is financing. All of these schools are SO EXPENSIVE and many of them don't give scholarships that are significant enough to make them affordable for us. For example, my daughter auditioned for the Manhattan School of Music last weekend. They told us that their average student gets about half tuition, which is around $24,000. They rarely give full scholarships. The total cost with tuition, room, board, and fees is $72,000, so even with one of their best scholarships, it would still cost $48,000/year.

My daughter's vocal coach is really pushing MSM or AMDA or another big NYC school, but my husband and I just can't justify spending that much for undergrad, especially for a degree in a subject that may or may not give her steady work with decent pay.

What are you all doing for your kids? Thanks in advance.

Newbie with many questions

Hello. My Son is a junior in high school. He had thought about acting and musical theatre as early as elementary school, however once he hit his freshman year he became undecided. Last year he decided he wants it!! He has been actively involved in Choir and Band, and Jazz Band, is familiar with auditions for his band and choral works. This year alone has had auditioned four times for those and also for the school musical. We have started to look at schools and are wondering when we should start touring and prepping. We had thought we would tour this past Fall but could not make certain times work with all of his other auditions. Are we too late to the game or is spring early enough? He is also looking into a vocal coach and some theater classes at a local youth theater. We are primarily concentrating on schools in the north east.
His NEW choir director is also a vocal, and acting coach and he is very familiar with my son and his asspirations and has truly encouraged him this past year. He worked him for last years musical, where he learned the part of George Banks in three weeks and performed amazinling, and that is not a proud mom talking, that is based on reviews throughout our community.
Please let me what we should be doing next.
