Search Tool to find Musical Theater Schools?

$

I'm an entrepreneur trying to build a tool that would help prospective students search through all the MT programs in the country. It would be a database filled with all the schools, but you could filter them based on specific unique criteria (like audition vs. non audition, study abroad programs or type of campus) I've built an outline of what I think would be helpful, but would love to run it by parents who are just starting out on this journey! Anyone up to discuss and give feedback who's just starting out? I'm not selling anything! Just want to hear whats most helpful from parents starting the journey.

Please let me know if this is an inappropriate post, I'm definately not looking to offend anyone. WIth my son being the only family member to be involved in Theatre, we knew very little of this whole process. Sure wish I would have found this site a year ago, instead of in Novemeber. We were able to get to visit and audition on campus at several schools. Thankfully my son has been accepted into 3 of the 4 BFA programs he has audition for so far. Going in, I really didn't think schools gave any money for Theatre. My son has been offered some Theatre scholarships, but I'm curious the amounts others are getting. I'm only wanting to know the amounts due to wondering if there is more Theatre scholarship money available? I do understand that all schools are different and can offer different amounts of scholarships. Not to mention many schools can offer accademic scholarships to help cover some of the school costs. I obviouslyunderstand that a lot of this can be based on the kids talent. I'm just wondering the amounts others are getting offered by schools. Again I'm not trying to affend anyone and I am definately not writting ths post to brag about what our kids are getting.

I have seen a few things out there about Molloy/CAP21 and wondering if anyone out there can provide any additional details. Looks like you apply academically first then if accepted you have an audition in the spring, no prescreens.

Not trying to start a controversy here but I know when we talk about Top 10 Programs, we all have a slightly different list. I'm interested to see where our similarities and differences lie. I'll start with mine, in order.

1. University of Michigan
2. Carnegie Mellon
3. Cincinnati Conservatory
4. NYU
5. Boston Conservatory
6. Point Park
7. Oklahoma City
8. Penn State
9. Syracuse
10. Pace

My daughter applied to 5 of these this year along with several well respected "second tier" schools.

What's your Top 10 list??

Hi everyone!!

I was wondering... have any of you received an academic/artistic decision from NYU, and if both, did they come at the same time? I am unsure whether my artistic and academic decisions from Steinhardt will come at once or separately... thank you!!!

The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

It's time! These boards have been extremely helpful to date, and I can't wait to embark on this journey with each of you! I will start us off!

I have a D who is pursuing a degree in MT. She is equal singer and actor, followed by dance. She began voice lessons when she was in the 4th grade and quickly found her way to performing after that. She is the dreaded "cute blonde" - we know she will have to work extra hard to stand out in that regard. She attends a PA high school and is currently working on her list. She is casting a wide net - even thinking of Royal Conservatorie of Scotland as a possibility. She is attending RADA in London this summer to get a taste of what it is like to study overseas.

I am really looking forward to getting to know everyone! I just ordered my desk calendar on Amazon to put up in our study as I saw one of the first schools we are looking at posted their 2018/19 details.

Here we go!!!

Dean College MT Program

Hello! I am looking for any information that may be out there on Dean College's MT Program as well as the college itself. I have searched the board and others have asked similar questions in previous years, in previous threads, however no one has answered, just other folks comments on how they are searching too. Any help would be appreciated. My son (a junior in HS) is interested in their program and tomorrow we will be participating in their Performing Arts Open House, which will allow him to sit in on a couple of courses, meet with admissions and take a tour, he is very excited is this is our first official campus tour for him. We are looking for any input so that we may have school/campus-specific questions for tomorrow. Thank you all for your advice and help so far!!

We would like to apply to a few more places (if there are any choices open) but can not travel anymore. Does anyone know of programs that accept video auditions and who may still be accepting submissions?

LACs with MT vocal coaches/teachers

Hello, I'm new to this forum though not entirely new to CC. I received some helpful feedback in the music forum for D1 a few years ago, and while this question I may cross-post there, am hoping for some insight from the MT folks as well.

D2 is HS junior embarking on college search, high achiever in academics, athletics, and music/drama. Her passion, like so many, is MT. She is classically trained for many years on voice and piano, and has been participating in drama and MT as leads and otherwise.

She has been thinking (maybe should say agonizing) about whether to focus entirely on MT and apply/audition for that universe, but is leaning strongly towards attending a LAC with strong academics and significant opportunity to both continue vocal development and to participate in MT throughout her undergrad years.

We have a tentative long list, and a couple fairly specific questions we'd appreciate insight on. She is digging around web sites but clear answers are hard to come by. She's starting to email departments too, but would love feedback from those with specific and current knowledge.

First questions is whether these colleges could provide D with a vocal prof/teacher for lessons who is experienced in teaching both classical and MT vocal techniques. My D knows very well the importance of a good teacher, and her current vocal teacher is one of the more important adults in her life. She very much hopes to develop a similar relationship at college, but those teachers can be rare.

Second question is how many musicals are actually produced at these colleges on an annual/semester basis, by dept and by students. This situation changes over time, so current info would be much appreciated if available. There are a great many LACs with great drama programs, and great music programs, and both, but it's tougher to get a good handle the consistency and quality of MT opportunity.

Thx in advance for all feedback! suggestions for other schools are welcome, if you can address the specific questions above. And note, she is also considering private universities such as NU and Brown, though that is a different universe.

A School List resource to help when researching programs and crafting a school list - edited.

ETA: PERSONAL FIT IS MOST IMPORTANT! A balanced list = schools that are not all extremely low odds at artistic admittance + schools that are not all reaches per the student's current strengths and weaknesses + schools that meet the individual goals (training, opportunities, finances, general university preferences, and more) of each student.

By nature of auditions being required, any audition-based program is selective to some degree.

ALSO, this post's intention is simply to help in school list creation. When evaluating acceptances in hand, students need to make sure the fit is paramount, and things such as recent alumni success and/or new leadership are also critical.
It seems to be more effective to look at the schools in terms of the competitivenss within artistic admission instead of tiers - so that would be EXTREME REACH/LOTTERY (less than 3% acceptance rate **approximate**), REACH (4%-8% **approximate**), SELECTIVE (could be broken down into more competitive at 8%-15/20% , and less competitive at 15/20%+ **approximate**), and NON-AUDITION SAFETIES (which might require an audition for scholarships only). The reason for this shift (tier-thinking to competitiveness-thinking) is that great programs exist across ALL of the categories, and "tiers" tend to insinuate lesser quality, even inadvertently. Knowing this info is important so that you can craft a BALANCED list, regarding difficulty of artistic admission, program focus, and your personal strengths/weaknesses/preferences.
We categorized based upon things programs were known for. See below and hope this helps.

Audition dates logistics

More than likely just venting but HOW can one plan for auditions when many schools aren't at Unifieds AND hold their on campus auditions on the same or near days? We want to knock off as many as we can in NY and Chicago but several other strong programs aren't there and only have a few days, some in direct conflict with Unifieds. We've been told to cast a wide net, but in doing so, not sure how she'll be able to audition at about 50% of them. Of course this is pre prescreen and I'm sure that will narrow her options (almost hope they do). Maybe I'm just starting to freak out on CC so she doesn't see that side of me. :)

I am starting to see dialogue on coaches, summer programs for the class of 2025 so I thought I would kick off a new thread focused on the new cycle.

Daughter has a coach and in the process of selecting her rep for pre-screens and auditions. She has a handful of summer programs to apply to. SATs in March. Let the wild ride begin!

My D auditioned in Chicago for CMU and loved the program. I know their academic requirements are stiff .. Does anyone know how the university views academics for the Theatre programs? My D is over 3.0 and 1000 SAT but the school has a pretty high threshold. Thanks

We are really interested in the Western Michigan MT program. From what we have seen on campus and researched it seems like a great program. Just wondering if there is anyone that could give any input pertaining to their experience, knowledge of classes, campus, quality of program, or just any info on WMich?

D just auditioned at SETC's as a freshman and received three callbacks, two were actual callbacks and one was just a drop off of a headshot/resume. Of the two actual callbacks, we are looking for any feedback or advice on two outdoor theaters - Theatre West Virginia and Stephen Foster Drama Association. If any of your S/D's have had experience performing at these venues, we would love to hear from you!

My D had a pair of So Danca Roxy x cross t strap shoes she loves. The elastic loop that connects the cross strap and t strap broke. Does anyone know if they are fixable ? I hate to throw them out if the rest of the shoe is in perfect condition. Thanks .
