Does the "Perfect" program exist?

$
0
0
As we are weighing out options, the pros/cons list is growing. Seems like each school is missing something. Not the right financial fit, less dance than we would like, voice leans more classical or contemporary instead of both (or one or the other), number of performance opportunities, etc. The list goes on an on.

So my question is, does the "perfect" program for your DD or DS really exist. Or do you chose the one with the most boxes checked and then make the program into what you need by seeking out additional training, performance opportunities, scholarships, etc?

Would love to hear from people in the same boat and from parents that have already been through this. If the program was missing a checkbox or 2 and your child still went there, how did it turn out once they were there training?

Summer Audition Workshops

I was reading in another thread about summer audition workshops that a couple of parents were recommending (The College Audition Program in Orlando @rickle1 and College Audition Prep Weekend in Dallas @onette ) and I wanted to start a new thread to see what other programs like this are out there. I have a junior D who could benefit from something like this. I know that lots of longer summer programs put some emphasis on the college audition, but I was specifically looking for a weekend type program because we don't have the budget for the longer programs. We are in the Southeast, so I'm especially interested in ones in this area. Thanks for any info!

Do any schools offer a semester in NYC?

I'm wondering if any of you know of any schools, particularly in the Midwest or Southeast, offer their MT students a semester of study in NYC? My d is interested in going to college there, but finances and some other factors probably won't make that feasible. A semester there would be a nice compromise.

Thanks!

Does anyone have feedback on the BAI in Palm Beach, FL at the Kravis Center?

D is a rising Junior. She's applied for a few intensives and this is another on the list to consider. I can't seem to find information outside of their own marketing materials.

Thx!

Aubrey Berg's replacement at CCM

Okay, I don't come here much to post since it's been a few (four to be exact) years since my daughter went through this process, but I just saw this article and had to SQUEE!! I've had the privilege of knowing Eric Santagata since he was a teenager and we performed together in a dinner theater production of No No Nannette. We're also from the same tiny CT town, a town that has spawned not only Eric but one of the producers of Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder (he won the Tony at 22) and three young people who performed on Broadway or national tours as kids (including my daughter). Yes, there's clearly something in the water.

Anyway, for those of you considering CCM, rest assured. The MT program will be in capable hands in the post-Aubrey Berg era.

Top 10 Musical Theater BFA Programs...Who Are They Really?

Not trying to start a controversy here but I know when we talk about Top 10 Programs, we all have a slightly different list. I'm interested to see where our similarities and differences lie. I'll start with mine, in order.

1. University of Michigan
2. Carnegie Mellon
3. Cincinnati Conservatory
4. NYU
5. Boston Conservatory
6. Point Park
7. Oklahoma City
8. Penn State
9. Syracuse
10. Pace

My daughter applied to 5 of these this year along with several well respected "second tier" schools.

What's your Top 10 list??

Hi guys!! I just wanted to clarify... people are starting to get their LIU Post decisions today and mine said acceptance into the Theatre Arts BFA and goes on to talk about their musical theatre program and reputation. I just wanted to be sure since it doesn't explicitly say MT concentration that it is for MT? I only applied to MT! Thanks!

Big List of MT Colleges: By State

MODERATOR NOTE: FOR THE MOST UPDATED LIST, PLEASE SEE POST #2 WHICH IS MORE COMPLETE THAN POST #1'S LIST.

Here is the big list of schools that offer a musical theater degree. This list was formerly part of a FAQ MT college site that a now CC "alum", Shauna, had compiled as a Geocities site that CC posted a link to at the top of our MT Forum. As the Geocities site is no longer available and is discontinued by Yahoo, CC is posting this valuable resource of the list of MT Colleges that was formerly compiled.

As Shauna wrote on her original Geocities site, this list was made in large part by Dancersmom and doctorjohn, two CC members, and although pretty much everyone on the board has contributed at some point, these two did the vast majority of the work. (Thanks also to ILMomsk, Lauren Z., Nick, klass, Lexasmom, Mary Anne, and MusThCC for updates.) The list begins with colleges that offer undergraduate musical theater degrees. They are organized alphabetically by state. Following the name of the school in parentheses is the type of degree they offer, and, in some cases, the number of students the school offers admission to.

Colleges that offer graduate degrees are at the bottom of the page.

If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, please let us know.

KEY:

A + next to a school indicates that they are especially selective (that they admit only a small number of applicants).

A ~ next to a school indicates that they are non-audition (that they do not require an audition to major in musical theater). Schools without this mark do require an audition.

It was suggested we start this thread for this year, so I figured I'd start it. Please add your username alphabetically.

Working on college audition material as part of summer program

$

A coach was advising NOT to work on material one wants to use as part of college auditions during a summer program experience.

I'm inclined to trust the coach, but I also feel it runs counter to at least some of the advice received on these boards ... namely, that a prospective MT major should take advantage of working on their material as part of a summer program experience (whether the program is school-specific or not, i.e., multiple programs represented).

I think the coach feels the program could say "no" to a piece the applicant was really inclined to do (because of the applicant's connection to the piece, etc.) without the summer program giving much thought / feedback to the applicant as to why not do it.

Welcome advice / perspective on this conundrum.

Anyone know about Nebraska Wesleyan or Millikin?

Anyone have current students (or know current students) at these schools? I was surprised there isn't a thread for Nebraska Wesleyan at the top. I have some kids with acceptances and they want to learn more about the programs. Thanks!

switching from Classical Voice to MT, need advice

$

Posting for my daughter, will tell her about this board just found. Daughter is lyric soprano (with good strong chest voice), doesn't belt. Experience in high school musicals and with show choir (simple jazz dancing), as well as Irish step dancing when real little. She wants to switch to either a combo program like Illinois's lyric theatre, or a program with good vocal teaching and coaching. Want to stay in middle plains states (base now is Missouri), would consider mid-south (TN, OK), or SE (strong ties to Florida, gets in state tuition there as well).

Her vocals are amazing for her age, 19. Would have a great career in Classical were she to continue, but she LOVES MT and says although she's great at Classical, she doesn't love doing it.

I would love program suggestions as she needs to "step on it" to get apps and/or pre-screens in. What programs to avoid (ie, lack of good vocal teaching/coaches/overly dance focus, or will force her to try and belt; she should stay lyric/legit, it's her strength and will get her the jobs in the future).

What programs would be good for her? (And we don't want a program that only mounts one musical a year because the strength is dance, but given time constraints and how new this is to us, need help.)

She will have four semesters of voice, theory, piano and tons of GE classes including foreign languages, so is already well-geared for a BM type MT program.

Thanks for any and all help!!! :)

Once our students have narrowed down their choices to 2 or 3 programs, this is a discussion space to compare and contrast. List what's most important to your MT, the schools in consideration, & questions/concerns ... then others familiar with the programs can chime in. Ready?... GO!

Class of 2024 No BFA MT Looking at Plan B/Gap Year

$

Coming down the wire for final results of BFA MT auditions and it's looking like my D will not receive any acceptances. Heartbreaking given the amount of work put into this process! She has some BFA Acting options, loads of BA Theater options and is on a few MT waitlists, but she's already starting to consider a gap year and reapplication next year with maybe a more equal emphasis on Acting and MT. Gulp! Should she just read the writing on the wall and come to grips with the likelihood that an insanely competitive MT career is not in the cards? I want to be supportive, but also don't want to re-live this. Looking for advice, pros and cons of each option from those (parents and students) who have gone down this road before, and camaraderie with those who are going through this experience this year. Thanks for the guidance and support!

Call colleges before you visit--some are cancelling in-person classes

I started this as a new discussion, not to discuss the Coronavirus, but wanted the topic heading to be prominent for everyone to see.

There are schools that are switching to online classes this spring and sending students home for a short or indefinite period of time. Make sure you call or email before you visit, even if you had already scheduled and confirmed prior to this week.

Is it too late?

Hi,
I have wanted to be an actor for my entire life, but due to some unfortunate situations, I was unable to get training until now, and I am 16 years old. I know that the field is unbelievably competitive, but is there any chance that if, somehow, I end up being very talented, and if I work harder than I've ever worked in my life, I might be able to get into a school?
If not, what are some other majors that might be able to fulfill this aspiration?
Thank you so much!
