Question for Florida State No's - help!

One of my kids did not receive a phone call OR a letter regarding his audition for Florida State. He finally emailed today and received pretty immediately back a "no." (These kids!! Don't want to call!!) A few hours later, his portal changed to include an academic acceptance letter and his major had changed to BFA Music Theatre. Is this what your student saw? Wish we could upload graphics here, but it states:

Congratulations <Name!>

Application Details

Type: Freshman First Time In College
Term: Fall 2020
Major: Music Theatre (BFA)
Location: Tallahassee
EMPLID: xxxxxx (using placeholders here)

Is this what you saw also? Is this a mistake? I told him to call now but it's too late in the day.

Does anyone have any feedback on Manhattanville's MT program? Can't seem to find much info - My D is seriously considering their program.

MT redirect to Acting

I am posting here instead of the drama/theatre forum because I am curious about others experiences who were originally MT applicants. If your child is a redirect to a program where there is a lot of crossover (i.e. they can get dance and vocal as part of the curriculum and they take classes with the MT students), some schools also say you can audition for musicals (and for MTs vice versa). However, given that you were not accepted for MT and are auditioning against those who were...would you even have much of a shot? I know my kid would be sad to not be in any musicals for 4 years (or longer). This is a hard question to ask at the schools because we don't want every question to the acting head to be about MT! Would love to hear more about people's experiences and if they are willing to name the school, even better!

Is there a thread somewhere that shows approximate MT class sizes/school names? I thought there was one, but I can't seem to find it. Thanks.

Once your MT Student commits to a school, please list it below. With so many students being accepted into multiple programs, we can see the results! We probably won't commit for a week or so, but I'm sure many have already done so.

TPAP / Elon / UNCSA area and summer allergies

I realize that SARS-CoV-2 may substantially impact society well into the summer, but to assume for the moment that travel and gatherings are permitted and life gets back closer to the way it was before COVID-19, I would like to get your input on the following topic:

I understand that some students spending the summer at TPAP / Elon or UNCSA may be impacted by seasonal allergies and / or humidity ... including hay fever, dust mites, etc. For people unfamiliar with this part of the country, what recommendations do you have on things to DO and / or BRING to avoid (or provide relief) to hay fever / humidity (and any other allergies I may be unaware of) during the summer months there?

Be well, stay well and thanks in advance for your input

I had a PM request for any info on Western Connecticut. Once i typed it all up I realized it could be very useful to others trying to make decisions without a chance to visit. I will post it in the Western Connecticut sub-section to make it easier to find. I encourage everyone else to do the same for campuses that you were able to visit in person. We have to do what we can to help each other during these crazy times.

If you have any knowledge of schools who are moving their acceptance decision dates, please post here. I think it will be helpful for students who may be waiting for others to make their decisions so that spots open up for those who are on waitlists.

Western Connecticut State University--Campus and Program Overview

WestConn was her last audition and we did it on campus. Here's my braindump of all my notes and everything I can remember.

They have a nearly brand-new, $90M performing arts building that was lovely. The actual performance hall is gorgeous. There's also a recital hall for the music majors that I didn't see. They have a black box space as well. It looks like every other black box, except it's actually dark purple, LOL. They showed us the dance studio--I can't remember if there was more than one. It looks like every other one you've seen. There were other studio spaces as well. I didn't see them, but it's where the vocal/monologue auditions were. Lockers for the kids in the hallway. The costume shop and scene shop are in the building. Costume shop looked bigger than many, but we didn't get to see the scene shop. There are practice rooms in the building as well. I didn't see them, but my D did.

WestConn has two campuses. The performing arts building is on the satellite campus. There are dorms on that campus as well and most of the performing arts kids live there. Head of program said he does what he can to help ensure the kids get housing there. Honors students can get on the satellite campus. The students said the dorms on the satellite campus are newer and nicer than on the main campus. There is shuttle transportation between campuses. Some of the juniors and seniors live off-campus nearby. It's free to have a car on campus. We didn't see the much of the surrounding area, but what we did see was nothing to write home about--strip malls on the way to the interstate.

Overview session was with Tim Howard who is the MT program head and Justin Cowan, who they just hired. He teaches musicianship classes and was the accompanist in the audition. I really liked how he spoke about how important musicianship is as a skill if you want to be someone considered for new works. Faculty are working professionals. The kids get 12 private voice lessons per semester plus 10 voice coaching sessions (this is about acting the song). MT requires 80 credits, another 40 gen ed are required. Study abroad is difficult. Everyone is expected to learn all aspects of theatre and everyone takes tech. They do 6 main stage shows a year as well as student directed one acts. There is a "transition to the profession" workshop senior year. They have a senior showcase. They are aiming for a class of 16 for MT.

The tuition is pretty tough to beat, particularly if you qualify for in-state tuition.

Minors for BFA/BM Students

I've been searching the web for various schools and whether they allow/accommodate for minors (both dance and non-mt minors). This is proving to be an enormous challenge. If anyone would like to chime in on what schools allow minors, please list them and what they allow (Dance, Performing Arts Management, Foreign Language, Business, etc...) Thank you for any insight you can provide!

It's time! These boards have been extremely helpful to date, and I can't wait to embark on this journey with each of you! I will start us off!

I have a D who is pursuing a degree in MT. She is equal singer and actor, followed by dance. She began voice lessons when she was in the 4th grade and quickly found her way to performing after that. She is the dreaded "cute blonde" - we know she will have to work extra hard to stand out in that regard. She attends a PA high school and is currently working on her list. She is casting a wide net - even thinking of Royal Conservatorie of Scotland as a possibility. She is attending RADA in London this summer to get a taste of what it is like to study overseas.

I am really looking forward to getting to know everyone! I just ordered my desk calendar on Amazon to put up in our study as I saw one of the first schools we are looking at posted their 2018/19 details.

Here we go!!!

Tom Brady!

TB12 is a Tampa Bay Buc, Hard for those words to come out of my mouth. Grew up 5 minutes from what was Schaefer Stadium (Now Gillete - albeit a new stadium). Live in Tampa for the past 27 yrs. You couldn't POSSIBLY describe two different organizations in virtually every way. Discipline, self policing, determination, will to win, etc. I guess the word is CULTURE. Hard to believe TB12 will be happy in a world so foreign to his winning ways. Maybe that's the point, he wants to change the culture in TB. Doesn't have much time left to do that.

On the field they immediately get better. They will definitely sell more tix and get more prime time games. I see why they want it. Don't see why TB wants it. Lots of warm weather teams so that's not it. Personally I thought he'd join Gruden at the Raiders. Talk about two workaholics. The Bucs are definitely not that.

Wonder how my Brady hating Bucco fans are today. I bet actually pretty happy as Jameis Winston is a proven Box of Rocks that will never improve. Can't imagine any team winning with him at the pro level. No discipline at all.

Good luck TB12. I will so miss those days but thatnks for the memories, and here's to creating some new ones. Haven't watched a Bucs game in many years. I'll probably tune in to check it out.

Anyone have current students (or know current students) at these schools? I was surprised there isn't a thread for Nebraska Wesleyan at the top. I have some kids with acceptances and they want to learn more about the programs. Thanks!

Online MT coursework -- how is it going?

I would love to learn about student experiences with online MT coursework for acting, singing and dancing:

1. What does the student feel is gained & / or missed compared to their prior experience?

2. What's been most challenging?

3. In what ways has the curriculum been altered to focus on aspects that are more easily conveyed and / or worked on remotely versus what the curriculum had planned to cover?

I greatly appreciate how everyone is rising to this health challenge and diving right into remote learning! Terrific spirit.

It was suggested we start this thread for this year, so I figured I'd start it. Please add your username alphabetically.

(if anyone wants to look back at last year's thread, here is the link: https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/2124537-mt-acceptances-class-of-2023.html)

I thought that it might be an easy way for future students to review options and final outcomes. Selected school of choice indicated by *** on either side of chosen program.
