Western Connecticut State University--Campus and Program Overview

WestConn was her last audition and we did it on campus. Here's my braindump of all my notes and everything I can remember.

They have a nearly brand-new, $90M performing arts building that was lovely. The actual performance hall is gorgeous. There's also a recital hall for the music majors that I didn't see. They have a black box space as well. It looks like every other black box, except it's actually dark purple, LOL. They showed us the dance studio--I can't remember if there was more than one. It looks like every other one you've seen. There were other studio spaces as well. I didn't see them, but it's where the vocal/monologue auditions were. Lockers for the kids in the hallway. The costume shop and scene shop are in the building. Costume shop looked bigger than many, but we didn't get to see the scene shop. There are practice rooms in the building as well. I didn't see them, but my D did.

WestConn has two campuses. The performing arts building is on the satellite campus. There are dorms on that campus as well and most of the performing arts kids live there. Head of program said he does what he can to help ensure the kids get housing there. Honors students can get on the satellite campus. The students said the dorms on the satellite campus are newer and nicer than on the main campus. There is shuttle transportation between campuses. Some of the juniors and seniors live off-campus nearby. It's free to have a car on campus. We didn't see the much of the surrounding area, but what we did see was nothing to write home about--strip malls on the way to the interstate.

Overview session was with Tim Howard who is the MT program head and Justin Cowan, who they just hired. He teaches musicianship classes and was the accompanist in the audition. I really liked how he spoke about how important musicianship is as a skill if you want to be someone considered for new works. Faculty are working professionals. The kids get 12 private voice lessons per semester plus 10 voice coaching sessions (this is about acting the song). MT requires 80 credits, another 40 gen ed are required. Study abroad is difficult. Everyone is expected to learn all aspects of theatre and everyone takes tech. They do 6 main stage shows a year as well as student directed one acts. There is a "transition to the profession" workshop senior year. They have a senior showcase. They are aiming for a class of 16 for MT.

The tuition is pretty tough to beat, particularly if you qualify for in-state tuition.

I was accepted into MPulse (University of Michigan’s summer program) for this summer, and today we just got the news that it has been cancelled and they are looking at doing it remotely. I am devastated by this news as I was looking forward to it so much. Have any other programs cancelled?

If you have any knowledge of schools who are moving their acceptance decision dates, please post here. I think it will be helpful for students who may be waiting for others to make their decisions so that spots open up for those who are on waitlists.

Online MT coursework -- how is it going?

I would love to learn about student experiences with online MT coursework for acting, singing and dancing:

1. What does the student feel is gained & / or missed compared to their prior experience?

2. What's been most challenging?

3. In what ways has the curriculum been altered to focus on aspects that are more easily conveyed and / or worked on remotely versus what the curriculum had planned to cover?

I greatly appreciate how everyone is rising to this health challenge and diving right into remote learning! Terrific spirit.

Hello! I am a hopeful future MT major but I also spend a lot of time on academics. I was wondering if anyone can steer me towards programs that have more academics in their curriculum/weigh academics into admissions? Thanks!

hi all! I am an international applicant (California, paying full) for Architecture to Carleton, Ubc and U Toronto (UBC is my top choice). I heard back from U Toronto and got in (yay) but am still waiting on UBC and Carleton. U Toronto says I have to commit by May 1st, but UBC and Carleton STILL haven't given me admissions updates and I'm getting nervous they may post that AFTER may 1st, leading to trouble. I saw a few others In my position on threads from years past, all of whom say they got their admissions updates late April to late may, soooo idk what to do. Help.

Big List of MT Colleges: By State

$

MODERATOR NOTE: FOR THE MOST UPDATED LIST, PLEASE SEE POST #2 WHICH IS MORE COMPLETE THAN POST #1'S LIST.

Here is the big list of schools that offer a musical theater degree. This list was formerly part of a FAQ MT college site that a now CC "alum", Shauna, had compiled as a Geocities site that CC posted a link to at the top of our MT Forum. As the Geocities site is no longer available and is discontinued by Yahoo, CC is posting this valuable resource of the list of MT Colleges that was formerly compiled.

As Shauna wrote on her original Geocities site, this list was made in large part by Dancersmom and doctorjohn, two CC members, and although pretty much everyone on the board has contributed at some point, these two did the vast majority of the work. (Thanks also to ILMomsk, Lauren Z., Nick, klass, Lexasmom, Mary Anne, and MusThCC for updates.) The list begins with colleges that offer undergraduate musical theater degrees. They are organized alphabetically by state. Following the name of the school in parentheses is the type of degree they offer, and, in some cases, the number of students the school offers admission to.

Colleges that offer graduate degrees are at the bottom of the page.

If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, please let us know.

KEY:

A + next to a school indicates that they are especially selective (that they admit only a small number of applicants).

A ~ next to a school indicates that they are non-audition (that they do not require an audition to major in musical theater). Schools without this mark do require an audition.

I'm opening this discussion again, haha! I was told to expect a decision from LIU Post in January, and if not, to schedule a Unifieds slot, but I have yet to hear anything. Has anyone else heard anything or is everyone still waiting?? Just checking to see if the timeline is matching right now!! Thanks!!

MT redirect to Acting

I am posting here instead of the drama/theatre forum because I am curious about others experiences who were originally MT applicants. If your child is a redirect to a program where there is a lot of crossover (i.e. they can get dance and vocal as part of the curriculum and they take classes with the MT students), some schools also say you can audition for musicals (and for MTs vice versa). However, given that you were not accepted for MT and are auditioning against those who were...would you even have much of a shot? I know my kid would be sad to not be in any musicals for 4 years (or longer). This is a hard question to ask at the schools because we don't want every question to the acting head to be about MT! Would love to hear more about people's experiences and if they are willing to name the school, even better!

Hi everyone,

Parent of an MSM MT 23 student here. Reaching out to all of you going through the process right now.

I know it's tough without access to visiting schools and such.

If you have questions regarding MSM, faculty, the program, curriculum, anything at all.

Please reach out!

Congrats on this achievement for all the students on getting this far under the circumstances! This won't stop them from doing their thing!
