Anyone have current students (or know current students) at these schools? I was surprised there isn't a thread for Nebraska Wesleyan at the top. I have some kids with acceptances and they want to learn more about the programs. Thanks!

Hi guys!! I just wanted to clarify... people are starting to get their LIU Post decisions today and mine said acceptance into the Theatre Arts BFA and goes on to talk about their musical theatre program and reputation. I just wanted to be sure since it doesn't explicitly say MT concentration that it is for MT? I only applied to MT! Thanks!

Hi! I would really appreciate some recommendations on college counselors that can guide me through the Musical Theater process of auditions and applications. Does not have to be psychical coaching. Does anybody know?

Big List of MT Colleges: By State

MODERATOR NOTE: FOR THE MOST UPDATED LIST, PLEASE SEE POST #2 WHICH IS MORE COMPLETE THAN POST #1'S LIST.

Here is the big list of schools that offer a musical theater degree. This list was formerly part of a FAQ MT college site that a now CC "alum", Shauna, had compiled as a Geocities site that CC posted a link to at the top of our MT Forum. As the Geocities site is no longer available and is discontinued by Yahoo, CC is posting this valuable resource of the list of MT Colleges that was formerly compiled.

As Shauna wrote on her original Geocities site, this list was made in large part by Dancersmom and doctorjohn, two CC members, and although pretty much everyone on the board has contributed at some point, these two did the vast majority of the work. (Thanks also to ILMomsk, Lauren Z., Nick, klass, Lexasmom, Mary Anne, and MusThCC for updates.) The list begins with colleges that offer undergraduate musical theater degrees. They are organized alphabetically by state. Following the name of the school in parentheses is the type of degree they offer, and, in some cases, the number of students the school offers admission to.

Colleges that offer graduate degrees are at the bottom of the page.

If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, please let us know.

KEY:

A + next to a school indicates that they are especially selective (that they admit only a small number of applicants).

A ~ next to a school indicates that they are non-audition (that they do not require an audition to major in musical theater). Schools without this mark do require an audition.

Pamdemic decision BFA for MT at Ohio U vs. LIU vs. gap year

I am trying to help my D choose between OH and LIU or gap year to apply to more schools in advance. These were walkins at unifieds before applying. Has anyone visited both campuses or have students attending either OU or LIU who can tell me the pros/cons about their campuses programs and opportunities to perform or allowed to audition for equity or community theater? Also if you have a student attending how are the MT online classes going, any talk about the fall semester?
Is anyone considering a gap year - with all the community shows being canceled in the next few months i'm worried they won't start up again during the school year. The larger theaters also seemed to have had auditions already for their 2020-2021 season. How do you get an agent to help find opportunities to audition?

Once your MT Student commits to a school, please list it below. With so many students being accepted into multiple programs, we can see the results! We probably won't commit for a week or so, but I'm sure many have already done so.

I had a PM request for any info on Western Connecticut. Once i typed it all up I realized it could be very useful to others trying to make decisions without a chance to visit. I will post it in the Western Connecticut sub-section to make it easier to find. I encourage everyone else to do the same for campuses that you were able to visit in person. We have to do what we can to help each other during these crazy times.

Just thought this might be helpful to consolidate into a thread, as a number of schools have virtual tours available for those who can't visit campus, or for future students who are exploring school choices.

Here's a link to CCM's virtual tour, hosted by a current MT student tour guide. (also cross posted under specific school forum)

We would like to find someone outside the family to help my son with his college essays - especially to hold him accountable to deadlines so I don't need to nag him all summer. I would love to find someone that understands the MT audition process and the specific essays required for all those applications. Does anyone have suggestions?

Hi everyone,

Parent of an MSM MT 23 student here. Reaching out to all of you going through the process right now.

I know it's tough without access to visiting schools and such.

If you have questions regarding MSM, faculty, the program, curriculum, anything at all.

Please reach out!

Congrats on this achievement for all the students on getting this far under the circumstances! This won't stop them from doing their thing!

My D auditioned in Chicago for CMU and loved the program. I know their academic requirements are stiff .. Does anyone know how the university views academics for the Theatre programs? My D is over 3.0 and 1000 SAT but the school has a pretty high threshold. Thanks

Major and minor help

I am a sophomore in high school and I’ve been thinking about college lately. I’ve always wanted to do something with musical theatre and for a few months now, I’ve been thinking of majoring in social work and minoring in musical theatre and after college, I would take about a year or two to focus on theatre but now that I think about it, musical theatre is my passion and honestly the only thing that I really love to do and I know I won’t get the full training experience if I minor in MT. So I’m thinking of majoring in musical theatre and minoring in social work or psychology. But I’m afraid that if I fail in theatre then I won’t even get a job in social work since it’s only a minor. Does anyone have any tips or information that I can use?
