Is there a thread somewhere that shows approximate MT class sizes/school names? I thought there was one, but I can't seem to find it. Thanks.

How soon is too soon to start preparing?

My D is starting high school this fall (though whether "live" or "virtual" is still up in the air). She will not be my first child to go to college, but she will be my first one looking to pursue a BFA in MT.

Her high school is a creative arts conservatory in which she will spend her mornings in a general academic curriculum, and her afternoons in a MT curriculum.

Although I know things can change over the next four years, right now, she feels like she really is "locked" into MT. Of course, she has set her sights on the "big" MT schools - Tisch, Carnegie, U of Mich., U of Cincy. Obviously, super-competitive schools that will be hard to get into.

She's always been a hard worker, with great grades and lots of voice/dance/acting extracurriculars, so she has the talent and the work ethic. But I want her to understand that those schools mean she will be a much smaller fish in a much bigger pond when applying, and she needs to continue keeping her foot on the pedal in order to make those dreams happen.

But then I don't want to be one of those weird hyper-obsessive parents who place undue anxiety and stress on my kid by planning too much, too early.

So, for those that have gone through this, how soon is too soon to start preparing for big goals like this? When *do* you start, and what do you start with?

Thank you!

Hello! I completed the long and strenuous musical theatre college audition process and will be attending NYU this year for musical theatre!

I have started a YouTube channel with everything you need to know to begin your journey and ace your auditions! I will also have more audition videos coming out soon!

Early Decision - does it give any advantage?

I see that there are a lot of posts out there re: ED, but most are several years old, and I didn't want to necro an ancient thread.

I've watched all of CAC's YouTube videos, one of which suggests that you apply to your "target" school last, after you've been through several rounds of auditions and have gotten comfortable with the process.

That makes a whole lot of sense, but what if the "target" school offers ED auditions *before* most other schools on your list offer regular auditions (or before Unifieds)?

Does auditioning ED (i.e., a strong firm commitment to the school very early in the audition season) really give any appreciable advantage in terms of admissions? Or are you better-served waiting until later to audition to your target school, after you've gone through several auditions and are "warmed up"?

In short, how much advantage does auditioning ED give you, if any at all?

I know that answer can vary based on the student, or a specific set of facts, but I am wondering what the general consensus is.

Thanks!

I know I've seen some posts regarding what rising seniors should be trying to accomplish the summer before audition season (essays, choosing material, etc.) Does anyone know where those threads/posts are? Thanks for any help!

Chance Me? Rising junior, hopeful MT major

Hi guys! I know it can be hard to chance people for schools(especially MT), but I was wondering if I could get your opinions. I am a rising junior.
Here are my current stats for this year:

GPA: 4.52W/3.96UW
PSAT 10: 1310….trying to break 1400 for PSAT and 1500 for SAT hopefully :)
I took 1 AP this year (bio) and I’m going to be taking 7 APs by the end of high school, including AP music theory

Here’s some of my training/my resume/other extracurriculars:
5 years of voice training
2 years jazz, 1 year tap, 1 year ballet, 1 year contemporary
Performed in community theater, two high school shows, one show in regional theater, and in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular

Co-founded and an organization that raised money for local charities through the arts and co-produced a fundraiser event
Interned at a children’s theater over the summer - helped teach choreography, hem costume pieces, etc
Stage Manager for my high school’s theater department
Assistant stage manager for a youth show at Centenary University freshman year

Played piano for 11 years and played competitively for 5, performed at Carnegie Hall twice and played with an orchestra
Won three voice competitions, sang at Carnegie Hall twice, also sang with an orchestra

I did Ithaca’s summer program as a rising sophomore and I was accepted into NYU Steinhardt’s Summer Study in Music Theatre this year

I definitely am looking at more BA programs than BFA - academics are really important to me. Some of the schools on my list are schools I want to apply to for English as well..

Here is my current list:
NYU Steinhardt (the dream!)
UCLA
Boston University
Brown (long shot)
Tulane
Georgetown (for English)
Northwestern (long shot again)
Fordham
Ithaca
Rutgers (in state, a safety at least for academics)
JMU
UToronto (for English I think at least)
McGill (for English I think)
USC
Marymount Manhattan
Columbia (see Brown and Northwestern lol)
UCI

I know it's really hard to chance people for MT, but if you guys have any suggestions for the next year or two/schools I should consider please let me know. Thank you so much for your help <3

At Unifieds but not auditioning - any benefit?

$

I'm asking generally in terms of "normal" Unifieds, not the 2021 COVID-19-impacted season:

Is there any benefit in being at Unifieds (i.e., in the hotel) even if you are not auditioning yourself? Are there any activities or "side-hustles" that a high school freshman/sophomores/juniors can participate in (e.g., workshops. masterclasses), or is it really just a bunch of seniors sitting in hallways outside conference/banquet rooms getting in the zone and waiting to be called?

I ask because I travel a lot on business, often to Chicago, and The Palmer House is one of my favorite places to stay when in town.

I was just idly wondering if there would be any value in bringing my D along if I found myself in Chicago during Unifieds week?

Please and thank you!

We would like to find someone outside the family to help my son with his college essays - especially to hold him accountable to deadlines so I don't need to nag him all summer. I would love to find someone that understands the MT audition process and the specific essays required for all those applications. Does anyone have suggestions?

Just thought this might be helpful to consolidate into a thread, as a number of schools have virtual tours available for those who can't visit campus, or for future students who are exploring school choices.

Here's a link to CCM's virtual tour, hosted by a current MT student tour guide. (also cross posted under specific school forum)

I am wondering if there is a current list somewhere of which MT schools require you to apply separately to their MT and acting programs (such as Michigan and Penn State) v. schools that automatically will redirect you to acting from MT even if you don't apply to acting initially?I tried searching the forum but did not find one. Thank you!

Hey, I went through the college application process last year and I was applying to the musical theatre programs at many schools. So many schools that it was very stressful and I ended up making a lot of mistakes along the way. So, I created this video to help people and make the process easier for people who are or have a child who is planning on pursuing musical theatre! The best time to start is right now especially because social distancing has left so much extra time! I hope you find it helpful and best of luck!

Tisch applications and advice

Hello,

I am looking to apply to Tisch (Musical Theatre) this year, I am a rising senior. Does anyone infer what the auditions could be like now that the pandemic happened and is still very apparent in the country? They haven't gotten back to me so I assume they don't know yet either, but I was wondering if anyone could input their opinion on the matter.

Also, if you attend Tisch or are an alum, how is it? Do you have any advice for someone who wants to apply? Furthermore, do you have to be accepted into NYU and Tisch simultaneously or does one acceptance come before the other?

Hello! I went through the musical theatre process last year and I'm now going to study musical theatre at NYU. The entire audition/application season can be so stressful, especially when you don't know exactly when you should be getting everything from finding material to applying to schools to filming prescreens done. So, I wanted to help anyone out who's going to start their application process this year (or any year) for mt programs. So, I made this YouTube video with exactly when you should get everything done and there's a link to the calendar in the description of the video so you can easily print it out and cross things off. The calendar spans from July through November and I sincerely hope you find it helpful!

26 y/o with B.A. in Communication, changing career paths to pursue MT

$

I'm a 26 y/o college graduate with a B.A. in communication looking to switch career paths and pursue musical theatre.

I don't have an extensive background in MT, but I do have dance experience as a scholarship recipient at a reputable studio (Cultureshock) in San Diego in 2012 and two community college performances where I played principal/lead roles in 2019. I'm currently attending dance classes and workshops at the San Diego Musical Theatre.

I'm considering formal MT education at university or conservatory as an option, and I was wondering if I have a shot at getting accepted into any of the big 10 MT universities? Are there any first year MT students who are returning undergraduates or other non-traditional undergrad students? Would I even be eligible for scholarships?

I'm wondering if a formal education is a good idea at this point... Or if I should just throw myself into NYC and take private studio classes as I audition... Not really sure where to find resources for my situation either as it seems terribly unique for MT--I am getting into the game quite late, haha.

I am positive that this is truly what I want to do. I'm just not sure how to get there at this stage in life.
