Indiana Bloomington MT?

Does anyone have information about the University of Indiana Bloomington MT program? Im having a hard time finding much online (aside from the University's website). We're from Los Angeles and finances are tight, trying to figure out if we can make the trip to audition in February. Would love to know what the reputation of the program is. Maybe connect with a student in the program now to ask questions. Has anyone heard anything? Any insight would really help. Thanks so much!

Questions you wish you had asked schools

As the audition season wraps up and (hopefully) offers arrive, I am curious for those looking back on the process - what questions do you or your S or D wish they had asked faculty or other students about the program prior to enrolling? My S has examined the curriculum and will sit in on class, etc. but what are the things you figured out were important after enrollment that you wished you had asked more about in the process. Thanks in advance!

An Introduction- Starting All Over Again!

Our daughter always loved musical theater, getting her start at around age 10 in local shows. She also performed with our city's opera company during her high school years and enjoyed other projects with them as well. She especially appreciated their excellent vocal training. Ultimately, for her college path, she chose classical vocal performance over MT. People were surprised, because she had been quite successful in high school MT and was known for her energy and comedy, but she would say "I have a better chance of being struck by lightening, than of being successful on Broadway," believing herself to be too weak in dance. Her senior year of HS, she opted for a university that had close ties to our city's opera company. She had attended master classes with some of the faculty who sang in our opera, as well as worked with some of the music students on opera projects. It seemed like a great fit... **Commence ominous minor key music** After her freshman year, she began to have doubts. She wasn't inspired by the classical music, theory was very difficult for her, and she missed MT. She realized she would probably need a master's degree to be successful, and she felt worried watching her talented grad school friends toiling away working at Starbucks and teaching piano lessons to get by. Her voice professor, chosen for her in part because of their shared interest in MT and R&B, temporarily left the university to take a role. One day she came home and said, "I don't know what I want to do, but I am pretty sure it isn't classical vocal performance." **Curtain crashes down** Act 2, Scene 1: 2 years later, our heroine is supporting herself, working full time by day and happily hoofing it in local theater by night. We, her parents, are willing to fund her education, but she doesn't want to waste our money while she "finds herself." One day at work, her phone rings with the news that an old friend has just landed a major role on Broadway. She hangs up and says, "What am I doing?!?" Scene 2: Great consternation ensues when our daughter realizes that her high school friends are now about to graduate from college. Though undecided about a career, she starts to attend a community college after work, with plans to transfer to a 4-year college. But what college? What degree? She is emphatic that she wants to be able to support herself after college. (She does not want to teach.) Mom and Dad are reluctant to see her give up performing which she enjoys so much. Scene 3: Deja vu all over again! The living room is littered with index cards containing information about college programs in MT, recording arts, and commercial music. Only now, it's a sadder but wiser mother and daughter (who at age 22 has seen several talented friends go off to LA and NY and fail to make it.) Act 3 is still unwritten. Stay tuned, because I think we might need your help.

Informal school visits

I am planning to take my d to visit one or two schools this spring to watch their musical theatre productions. As far as I know, there is not a preview day scheduled, but I would love for her to get a tour of the facilities and be able to visit with a mt student. It is likely that she will apply to the programs when the time comes. How have you all handled informal visits? We don't know any students in these programs, btw. We have some people who can show us around campus, but not the mt departments. Any advice? Who would be the best contact person? What questions would you ask?

Young ARTS

Yes, I know it is early and I have inquired lightly about this but it seems upon looking at previous years of winners we have not seen any sing classic soprano songs. Most of the winners are singing belt songs from modern musicals. Would anyone care to comment or correct this? Thanks for any input.

Dean College

I noticed at Unifieds in Chicago they were talking to a lot of students and doing a lot of walk-ins. The new dean of the school of arts is David Kasner and he is from Emerson and just started at Dean in 2012. A lot of the kids came out saying he was giving them some very helpful feedback. Does anyone know anything about them or their program? I know their BA is just shy of being considered a BFA as far as their requirements go but other than that I do not know much about them. Maybe someone that knows David from Emerson or knows anything about Dean could share what they know.

Well, the LA Unifieds are done. My S auditioned with 10 schools, including 2 dance calls, and along the way we met a lot of really great people, both parents and students. There sure is a lot of great talent out there. I'm excited to see where everyone ends up.

Hi there, I'm new on this site and I've seen some threads about under 18 kids auditioning for broadway, and I was wondering what your input is on this. DD really wants to audition for Minnie Fay in the broadway revival of Hello Dolly. Is it disrespectful for a teen to go into an adult audition? Thanks!

Musical Theatre universities in the U.K. that allow double majors?

So, I want to do a double major in Journalism & Musical Theatre, but every university I've looked at either didn't have one of the majors, or didn't allow double majors. Has anyone seen or heard of any universities that would allow me to major in both?
