Summer Stock
Hey y'all! I'm a current MT freshman and everyone in my class is going crazy over summerstock auditions. I'm applying for Strawhats and I plan on auditioning at several open calls in NYC (I already attend school here). I'm also hoping to do video applications/auditions for a few. This process is 10000X more terrifying to me than the college audition process, so I wanted to start a forum where current college students/graduates/their parents share their personal experiences with auditioning for summerstock theatres! (There are a few older forums on this but I just wanted to make an updated one). So if anyone has any thoughts, stories, advice, etc. on this process PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE share!
I personally am wondering if anyone has attended any open calls in NYC, and what those were like? It's so intimidating to me because most of the open/non-equity calls are the day after EPA and ECC auditions and I feel like a baby. Hoping someone has some insight on this!

Drake University MT Program
I would love to hear from current students or parents of current students in the Drake University MT program. My D has just been offered a place in next year's program and I'm now on the hunt for more information and experiences with the program. Thank you!

Success of current college student, not in a BFA program or at known school -
So, here is just a little encouragement for folks who are considering the pursuit of an education/life/career in MT via a path other than the coveted BFA. We know a young man who is finishing his junior year as a Commercial Music major at a small, southern, religious college. It's not a well-known program (academically or artistically), and not touted anywhere on this board. He has become a master at creating opportunities and self-promotion - attends regional auditions, plays local gigs, competes in NATS contests, has become proficient in several instruments, takes auxiliary lessons as time and money permit. He just landed a solid, respected, and paid summer stock job. I understand the desire for a BFA acceptance, and the deeply-seeded hope to land a "top tier" spot. My child, a HS junior, is already in that mentality even though we have 6 months until the process begins for him. But I'm watching this tenacious college student's journey unfold before my eyes and he is having true success. And I really don't think luck has too much to do with it...
*just posted this in venting 2021 thread, but wanted to make sure it wasn't missed. BAL to all!!!!

Wagner SMTI feedback
Looking for input/feedback on the Wagner SMTI program. D is accepted and planning to attend in July. I know only 12 are accepted to program but wondering how many actually apply (i.e. Is this a popular/well thought of program)? This is our first experience with a summer program so any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated!! Thanks

Input on a hard decision?
Hi everyone! I'm a student who just went through the MT audition process, and I'm now at the point where I have to start trying to make decisions. After receiving a flood of rejections that was heartbreaking to go through, I feel very fortunate to have acceptances to 2 BFA programs, both of which I had actually added to my list at the last minute!
So, right now I'm deciding between a vocal performance major at my top choice school, which I fell in love with both academically and for MT, although I unfortunately did not get into the MT program. However, there is the possibility of re-auditioning for MT freshmen year if I turned out to not be happy with vocal performance, but I don't even know if I would do that.
I have 2 choices for a BFA MT at schools that were not even originally on my list, and that I'm not too sure about. They're not bad schools, and they're solid choices, but I feel like I would regret not going to my 1st choice because I love the school as a whole so much. Then again, I might regret it if I choose the VP major at my 1st choice, and later regret not taking the offer of the BFA MT.
My voice teacher teaches both classical and musical theatre styles, although classical is truly where her area of expertise lies because she started as a classical singer herself. After I didn't get into school #1's MT program, and I was telling her about how much I loved the school, she encouraged me to go audition for the VP major, as she thought my voice naturally fit better there, and thought I would have a good chance.
So. I can either go to a school that I am in love with and for my second choice major, or go to a school that I'm not too sure about, where I got accepted as my first choice major. My gut feeling is to go to school #1... but thinking about my long term goals, musical theatre training will be much more helpful. You can see why this is such a hard thing for me to think about! So, any opinions that people could share would be amazingly helpful!
***I'm also still waiting to hear back from 2 MT programs, but I have a hunch that they'll be no's.

Why I've Grown To Hate The College Audition Process
Hey guys, I just published this criticism of the college audition process on The Odyssey. It is a realization that has slowly dawned on me over the last two years of auditioning for and attending a BFA MT program. Essentially, I loved the process when I was going through it, but in retrospect it seems unreasonably demanding (read: expensive) to the point of being elitist. After a recent in-class discussion about this (GO UARTS for letting us talk openly about these issues!!! I genuinely believe the people here are doing their absolute best to combat this), and an amazing article I read on the American Theater Magazine web site (I will link it below), I thought it was a necessary topic to breach with people who have been through the college audition process. Aside from CC where everyone is more or less anonymous, there is very little frank discussion of finances for artists or criticism of this arts education system that blatantly favors upper class students, even more so than in regular admissions. Actually, this is also the one place I've seen real complaints about the cost of auditioning for college. And I really appreciate that.
And here's the article in American Theatre that partially inspired it: http://www.americantheatre.org/2017/01/24/how-to-make-it-as-a-poor-theatre-artist-in-new-york-city/

Finding a good fit/growth in college
This is sort of two questions combined into one post. I'm a junior at a large high school (2000 people, 100+ audition for musicals) that favorites seniors. Over the last year or so I've had a few feature roles and a supporting one this fall at a theatre outside of school (before that I was strictly in ensemble since getting to high school). I'm one of a few students in my grade to have been in an honors choir since sophomore year, and people tell me I am good, but I know I am not professional yet. I know many kids have been leads in the majority of their school shows and some have even won awards or done professional theatre, but I always sort of figured (not to discredit anyone who does go to a small school), that I would get leads/more roles if I went to a smaller school. I've been watching senior showcases however, and the people in them are SO talented. Based off of people's experience, do students get to college already pretty amazing and just improve while there, or do they completely transform as performers? I know there are a few superstars who are at a professional level, but I am talking about the majority of students auditioning. Did they all get to college practically professional, or were they simply talented high schoolers who wanted to pursue theatre as a career?
My second question is: Are there any schools out there for kids who aren't at a professional level (if the majority of students walk into college already amazing/nearly professional). Schools that offer a good musical theatre education whose alumni have success working in the field but that have a smaller audition pool, or perhaps they accept a larger number of students? Thank you so much, and best wishes for everyone waiting to hear audition results!

What Vocal Qualities are Musical theatre Faculty looking for at Auditions
I'm going to be taking a gap year next year to focus on strengthening my weaknesses for MT Auditions next year. And for me that is Singing and dancing. I am a Tenor and I was wondering what type of vocal Qualities for men they are expecting you to show while you are singing your songs to them. Also do they want to see if you can belt if your a guy because that is one of the things I need to work on this year.

Arcadia University
I originally posted this in the Theatre/Drama Majors area of the forum, but I thought I'd post it here too for good measure to see if anyone had any input.
I was recently accepted into Arcadia's Acting BFA with their new MT concentration, and it basically is my front runner at this point. I was soo sure, but my overthinking side is starting to get to me. The acting training seems wonderful and the students speak highly of it, but is it an overall well-regarded program? And the school itself, I know it's small and not a party hard school, and that it's known for study abroad, but is it a well-regarded school in general? A lot of school-review sites I've found seem to put it in a "pretty good" category, but those few "this school is terrible don't even think about coming here" (in regards to the school as a whole, not the acting program) always worm their way into my brain. I want to go to a good school, not just a "meh" school with a great theatre program. Should I just take those comments with a grain of salt? I'm planning on seeing a musical there next month so I can see what their productions are like, but can anyone give their opinion on what they think the quality of training is compared to some other schools? Specifically I guess would be Viterbo's BFA in Acting which is another acceptance I have. Also, this is one of the bigger things, I can't seem to find much about their alumni success? Is this something I should be worried about? I want to act in some realm professionally someday, so should not knowing specifics about alumni success in the professional scene be a red flag? Any input would be appreciated.

What are My Chances of getting into a Musical theatre program next year Honest Opinion?
After 1 year of being a BA theatre major(basically being a 2nd class citizen to the BFA Acting and Musical theatre majors) at my college as a freshmen, I've decided to take a gap year next year to get ready for auditions for Musical theater in jan, feb and march 2018.
after not really noticing it my first 17 years of my life, I found the world of theater when I was a junior in high school and fell in love with it instantly and decided to major in it. I just started singing in a musical theater class at my college this year and during the class my passionate professor made me want to do musical theater as a career and my iPhone has been full of cast recording ever since september 2016.
I'm new to singing and honestly my voice needs help(but have gotten better with lifting my soft pallate) but I need to work on alot of things like tone, breathing, belting without constriction it sounds like mickey mouse when I try to do it sometimes, I have problems singing with a breathy voice sometimes, I need more resonance, I kinda fixed my nasal sound quality lol, I mostly need to learn how to belt because there is alot of that in the musical theatre songs I choose.
I know I have alot to work on in terms of my voice, But I know I can get better before these auditions for musical theatre next year and I'm planning on doing everything in my power to get into a musical theatre program next year, to getting quality voice lessons to help me, an audition coach probably Mary Anna Denard( I've emailed her), Dance classes consisting of ballet, jazz and tap ,auditioning for local plays and musicals ,taking piano lessons to help me with music theory, Acting is the strongest out of all 3 and the other 2 o loare at a beginning level. It would be easier for me to get into an acting program but I just see musical theatre performances at the local theaters and colleges and at the tonys and I see the amazing musical numbers with all the extraordinary dancing and singing and I just want to be able to do that I know its going to be a hard and long road but I have just got to try.
I dont know How I'm going to pay for all this lol, My parents aren't in my life that much and I live with my aunt and she barely makes over $20,000 a year, I'm planning on working 30 hours a week during this gap year and maybe even taking out loans to pay for the college audition coach help. Im also planning on auditioning at at more than 15 BFA programs making a smart list with some reach schools.

Syracuse University B.F.A. Musical Theatre Class of 2021 - Anyone hear anything yet?
Hello! I applied to the Syracuse University B.F.A. Musical Theatre program, and it is definitely one of my top choices. I have read rumors from past years that the program sends out decisions every Friday in March in random groups, but I still wasn't sure. I want to start this forum so you guys can post if you have received any decisions yet or if you have any information about when we will be hearing from them. Good luck to you all!

Go to either Facebook (if you're a member) or Google and search "Nebraska Stories Schmackary's" and enjoy the video.
It's a delicious reminder that this journey can sometimes have surprising endings that are just as sweet!
(Also, go to Schmackary's next time you're in NYC...yum.)

Voice Lesson Time at Schools
We are discovering that each school is different in it's approach to private lessons, from the amount of time to the rep during the lessons. Are there any parents that would share what they know about the time for lessons at your kids' schools? 30 min, 45 min or an hour. Any thoughts would be helpful. :)

I want to Major in Musical Theater
I want to go back to school for Musical Theater or regular theater, but I'm not sure what to do. I don't have any experience with Dance, Acting, or Singing. (Although I have taken a Voice class once and was told I have potential.) I just want to know what someone like me can do to gain acceptance into a school that offer Theater majors.
I've looked some stuff up on YouTube and various sights and it seems like I'd have to audition for the course.

Hidden out of state costs, even with in state tuition?
My parent and I got in an argue net over the cost of out of state schools that provide in state tuition for mt majors. I understand that cost of living may be higher, but some of my schools instate cost $26+ per year and somewhere out of state like Montclair has 11k tuition cost.would it still be cheaper to go to my instate schools?

U Tampa MT? Samford MT?
I feel like I've been posting waaaay too much but here goes another one...
I've been accepted to U Tampa's MT program through video submission, so I've never visited or interacted with any of the faculty (I plan to visit soon though). From the U Tampa website, I can't see a ton of information on the program. Are there any current U Tampa MT students who could speak about the program, or other accepted MTers who are considering it?
Also, does anyone know anything about Samford for MT? It seems like a small but solid program!
