Western Carolina University - Musical Theatre Program

Hi, I am trying to make Western Carolina U have a larger online presence. We are a very new program. Next year marks our 10 year anniversary. Our audition numbers and our class numbers have grown significantly in the past 4 years. I am currently a Junior MT here. I could type out lists and lists of the WONDERFUL THINGS here at the school. But I wanted to save that and see if anyone had any questions about the school, the program, etc. I find that it helps hearing it from a student rather than (HEAR SAY). Terrence Mann still comes in annually to teach masterclasses as well direct a show. Since I have been here at WCU he has directed A Grand Night for Singing, Kiss Me Kate last year and is currently directing Sweeney Todd this year. If anyone has any questions on the program please ask. You can find more info and media on our website.

Not trying to be alarming. But has anyone seen this? http://www.rider.edu/pathforward/updates Rider is selling Westminster Choir College. (Which is in Princenton NJ not on the Lawerenceville campus. Will that impact the MT students?

AMDA... I'm so confused?

I want to major in musical theatre. But I'm so confused on how the college thing works? I want to go to AMDA (American Musical and Dramatic Academy) in New York.. but I have some questions. Do I need to go to a University too? If so do I need to go before or after? I don't know terminology. What do you call this school? Vocational? Trade? Specialty? What is it? What are my chances of getting a job after I graduate? How do I get scholarships for this type of school? Do I need ones that specifically apply to theatre? Sorry for all the questions... but I don't know who else to ask without feeling stupid :/

Looks like potential trouble ahead for this school - due to the sale falling through they won't be taking any new students this year. They were very visible at Chicago Unifieds, taking lots of walk-ins. I feel bad for any accepted students who might have been planning to attend. Here is one of the articles: http://www.sfreporter.com/santafe/article-13225-sfuad-snafu.html

Hello! I applied to the Syracuse University B.F.A. Musical Theatre program, and it is definitely one of my top choices. I have read rumors from past years that the program sends out decisions every Friday in March in random groups, but I still wasn't sure. I want to start this forum so you guys can post if you have received any decisions yet or if you have any information about when we will be hearing from them. Good luck to you all! :-)

Schools with most cross-casting, class crossover between Acting and MT

Hey brilliant CC folks - can we make a list of the schools that offer a good bit of similarity between their straight acting and MT programs, especially those that include singing and dance, and allow auditions within their respective department's productions? It might make it easier for future applicants to create their school list! Thx a zillion. :)

Negotiating scholarships / financial aid - how to?

As we all getting closer to making some extremely important decisions, including taking up new financial responsibilities, I though I would ask past years' parents to share their experience, advice and tips on negotiating awards (scholarships and financial aid) on behalf of their students. What are the best tactics, whom to approach, when to start, how to state your case, how and when to follow up, etc. What schools have you had experience dealing with, and whether or not you have succeeded? We, parents of the class 2021 will be immensely grateful to you for sharing...

LIU Post's MT Program?

I recently got accepted to LIU Post's musical theatre program after my walk-in audition at NYC Unifieds! It was my most enjoyable audition yet, and I felt like the students and admissions people who were there were all very close and very excited about the school! Many other kids that I talked to who had auditioned also commented that they felt like the auditor was very interested them as a unique individual, and I would agree with that. The auditor was actually the only one I have met who actually stood up and shook my hand before I started! I'm interested in the program, but I don't know much about it! Does anyone here feel like they could give an overview of the program or even share their opinions about it?

New Summer Program

For those of you still looking for summer programs, My College Audition in Boston is going to be having their first intensive this summer. It's audition based (you can submit a video) and geared towards rising freshman/sophomores/juniors to give them a glimpse into what a BFA program would be like and also give them a jump start on the college audition process, including having at least one monologue and song ready for summer program auditions, professional auditions, etc. I know links are frowned up here, so I'll refrain from posting one, but all the information is available on their website.

I now have my second notice from a school that the FAFSA form indicated uncertainty about my daughter's citizenship. So I have to send Certificate of Citizenship (or a copy anyway) to them. I'm trying to figure out which government agency I need to get this information corrected by. Is it IRS? Social Security? Thoughts, anyone? TIA.

I know they only except 16 to 22 BFA students each year but approximately how many students apply? Where do most of the students come from that attend the BFA program?

Gap Year Antecdotes

$

I am seeking first or second hand reports of parents/students who opted for a gap year, and the outcome. My D committed to a less competitive BFA MT in state with a full tuition scholarship nearly two weeks ago-and I can tell that her heart is truly not committed to this decision. We went back over her list of other options-BAs in theatre, BAs in other interests...she feels best about the decision she made-but not good about it, if that makes sense. Going in, her intent would be to re-audition for transfer next year. But she feels badly about that-essentially lying all year; never really committing herself fully to the program in hand. Her academic stats are outstanding, and she received a lot of great academic scholarships; but we have been warned repeatedly that transfer scholarships are never as good as the Freshman awards. I am not seeking advice-lots of sleep has been lost weighing pros & cons. I am seeking success (or horror) stories about the gap year! I have said it before-I am grateful for this community, and regret not having found it earlier in D's journey!
