I am trying to help a young man who would like to start an MT program in fall. I was hoping you all knew of any programs that might accept on a rolling basis and still have auditions. I know this is crazy late!!

Class of 2018 Thoughts on Completion of Freshman Year

Since there's a bit of a lull here in CC MT/Acting/Voice land as Class of 2019 prepares to become college freshmen and Class of 2020 begins their journey, thought I'd start a thread on how freshman year (or gap year?) went for the Class of 2018. What was learned? What were the surprises? What changes/path corrections are planned as sophomore year approaches? Any MT/Theatre-related plans for the summer? Anything to share about the overall arc of the entire application, audition, acceptance, attendance, completion of first college year (or non-college year)? Things you'd do differently or that went totally as hoped for?

Hi - my son has been accepted to a few programs for MT/theatre and I wanted to hear pros & cons that may help with the final decision. He is looking for a program that is highly focused in performance and less academic. He has 8 years acting training, 5 years private vocal - classical, little dance training. He is strongest in voice, then acting, little dance (he is not a triple threat). He attends a performing arts hs and has had the leads for the past 3 years. He is a very hard worker and wants a very challenging program that will make you work hard. He's a serious kid with little patience for fooling around when it comes to performance. Accepted: UArts - BFA MT Baldwin Wallace - BA Theatre Point Park - BA Theatre Shenandoah - BM Vocal Performance Rider - BA Theatre Waiting to hear from: Montclair - BFA MT Hartt - BFA MT Boston Conservatory - BFA MT

Unfortunately found these boards rather late in the process and have many regrets after all the late night reading. Can anyone give any insight on the Emerson BFA MT major as compared to Wagner? Also I see no mention on these boards of the BFA at Kean University any info there would be appreciated. I know that We are lucky to have even those choices in this grueling process. Thanks

Western Carolina University - Musical Theatre Program

Hi, I am trying to make Western Carolina U have a larger online presence. We are a very new program. Next year marks our 10 year anniversary. Our audition numbers and our class numbers have grown significantly in the past 4 years. I am currently a Junior MT here. I could type out lists and lists of the WONDERFUL THINGS here at the school. But I wanted to save that and see if anyone had any questions about the school, the program, etc. I find that it helps hearing it from a student rather than (HEAR SAY). Terrence Mann still comes in annually to teach masterclasses as well direct a show. Since I have been here at WCU he has directed A Grand Night for Singing, Kiss Me Kate last year and is currently directing Sweeney Todd this year. If anyone has any questions on the program please ask. You can find more info and media on our website.

Michael Feinstein's Songbook Academy in Carmel, Indiana

OK this is a total plug for this competition, but my daughter attended twice and other MT kids would get so much out of it. https://www.thecenterfortheperformingarts.org/Great-American-Songbook-Inititative/Annual-Competition To apply, you send in two songs from the Great American Songbook- pretty much all pre-1965 MT songs can be used. They pick 40 kids from around the country. Almost all of the 40 kids that are selected are musical theatre geeks. So, they all really get along and are supportive of each other, even though it is a competition. During the week, they have wonderful workshops with great instructors and there are always a few Broadway actors. My daughter's first year, Laura Osnes came to give them a workshop. This year, it was Jarod Spector and also Janis Siegel from The Manhattan Transfer. My daughter got to do an improve call and response duet scat with her- cool! The older kids that my daughter has met there are now all in college MT programs so she knows people at PACE, CMU, Rider, Montclair, UM, Texas, Marymount...etc. And, the winner of the Songbook Academy from three years ago, Maddie Ballio, was the girl selected to be Tracey in Hairspray Live. Go Maddie!! To top it all off, Michael Feinstein who started the program works with the kids and he is the absolute best. He is a consummate performer and they learn so much from him. When he was performing in our area last year, the Songbook Academy contacted my daughter to ask if she would like to perform a song in one of his shows. She did and it was the thrill of her life (so far) and it looks great on her college resume...just saying. Michael tries to have the songbook kids perform with him as much as he can. How awesome is that? Plus, the kids learn all about the songs from the Great American Songbook and how to interpret and perform them. This is the purpose of the whole thing; to keep these songs going with the younger generation. My daughter was a top 10 finalist this summer. She got to perform her two songs in the beautiful concert hall in Carmel in front of a sold out audience. Being a finalist, she can't go again, but she wishes that she could go for a third time. THIS PROGRAM IS FANTASTIC!

Dance/Vocal/Acting at a CC?

Hi, i'm a senior going to a CC for a year after high school. I've always been interested in musical theatre and took classes/was in shows during high school. I'm not majoring in it, though. I was wondering how hard it is to take dance/theatre/vocal courses at the CC alongside my academic courses, or if I would be better off doing it privately. The overall price would be cheaper at the CC and I feel as if the environment would be more focused and serious, but i'm worried about them taking away from my academic classes since it's not my major. For instance i'm having a hard time finding a serious dance course for people my age. I have about 4 years of dance experience, and the only classes I can find are either too easy or too hard- last year I took both a leaps and turns course and a contemporary course. The leaps and turns course was centered around students who are on competitive dance teams, so I feel like I didn't learn much since I was just trying to keep up with everyone else. The contemporary class on the other hand was more based around having fun so I didnt get many corrections and never really improved on any of my skills. My major is Marine Biology so I will be taking a lot of science courses. I also work part time(3 days a week). Does anyone have any experience with taking these kinds of electives alongside academics? Thank you!

I'm interested in hearing from students/parents about the MT program. We haven't been able to do a campus visit yet and from my research I feel like I'm getting conflicting information on the quality of program. Some of the articles I have seen mention past financial trouble. Anyone aware of the current financial state and if/how it is affecting the quality of the program? Thanks :)

College student looking to try the audition process again - advice?

Hey everyone. So, to start off, musical theatre is my passion. To this day I tell people my dream is to be on Broadway or even just work as professional MT actress. Long story short, due to a lot of uneventful circumstances, I was unable to audition for a lot of MT schools during the class of 2019 BFA audition season my senior year of HS (2014-2015), and for those that did have MT, they were non audition and I was either rejected academically because of their low acceptance rates or couldn't afford the school. The college I ended up choosing was the only one to give me basically a full ride, but it doesn't have a musical theatre major. I'm trying to make the best of it, but really, this school isn't for me - it's too large, the arts are underfunded, and the atmosphere is just isn't what I want out of college. I'm only a sophomore and I can feel myself losing all the musical theatre skills I learned in high school, and I want to be able to learn and grow and train with people my age and improve my craft, not just perform. So I think now that I'm older, more mature and (trying) to become more independent from my parents, I want to try and go through the audition process again during what would be my junior year while trying to train outside of school to prepare for the auditions (which may or may not include still attending the school I'm at now). The musical theatre program I am looking should be: - either a BFA-conservatory style with in a larger university or a straight conservatory - accepts transfer students OR if I decide to start completely over as a freshman, is open to accepting and training a student three years older than the rest of the class - will accept at least some of my gen eds (if a university) - one that fosters community and not competition (perhaps a smaller class size) - focuses on both classical/Golden Age and contemporary/pop/rock MT - reasonable dorming space - has showcases - not a billion MT majors vying for a mainstage show spot - an equal chance for everyone - no cut program - allows majors to pursue outside theater interests, such as student directed shows or writing plays I hope this is enough info to get some advice - I really want to get started on this process as soon as possible!

Success of current college student, not in a BFA program or at known school -

So, here is just a little encouragement for folks who are considering the pursuit of an education/life/career in MT via a path other than the coveted BFA. We know a young man who is finishing his junior year as a Commercial Music major at a small, southern, religious college. It's not a well-known program (academically or artistically), and not touted anywhere on this board. He has become a master at creating opportunities and self-promotion - attends regional auditions, plays local gigs, competes in NATS contests, has become proficient in several instruments, takes auxiliary lessons as time and money permit. He just landed a solid, respected, and paid summer stock job. I understand the desire for a BFA acceptance, and the deeply-seeded hope to land a "top tier" spot. My child, a HS junior, is already in that mentality even though we have 6 months until the process begins for him. But I'm watching this tenacious college student's journey unfold before my eyes and he is having true success. And I really don't think luck has too much to do with it... *just posted this in venting 2021 thread, but wanted to make sure it wasn't missed. BAL to all!!!!

Does anyone have info on Belmont or any experience there? I read that they have a great crossover program between VP and MT, but there's not a separate board here for it or much discussion about it. TIA!

SETC 2018

FYI: SETC 2018 convention will be held in Mobile, Alabama, March 7 - 11 (little later than in the past few years). Prescreen dates for professional unified auditions are now posted - weekends in mid-October - November 2017 (live, no videos). Applications will open September 15 and deadlines will vary according to prescreen state (late September - late October). Prescreen location is determined by state of residence OR state in which student's college is located. Deadlines for these prescreens come way before other unified audition deadlines. It's not too early to be planning out audition schedule now - taking into consideration fall show/rehearsal schedules, as well as what will possibly be going on next spring. Many students tend to put this application off until too late because it comes on just as college program and academic commitments are ramping up in fall semester (faculty letter of rec is required). Those accepted for the March convention are generally notified within a few weeks of prescreen date. Getting off waitlist (yep, it happens here, too) can take until January or even February, in some cases. For those graduating this spring (and maybe next December??) there is also an SETC unified professional audition late August in Atlanta, GA. Those of you who have current HS sophomores may also want to look into this convention for its unified MT college auditions and terrific workshop offerings. Application deadline is significantly later (December/January?).

Heightism? Other ponderings on "type" in MT

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending an MT production at "tippy top" program. I have seen many of their performances over the decades (like three). In the last few years, something about the cast members at large has caught my notice: In this particular show, with a cast of 10 -12 female cast members, more than half of them appeared to be of short stature - under 5' 2"-ish to perhaps 4'9" or thereabouts (one woman appeared "tall" to my eye (6'?) and two/three "average"). Amongst the 12 or so men, maybe two were 6' or taller, a couple average, the rest 5'9"-ish or under. This trend(?) has been very noticeable to me in the last three years or so at this program. Has anyone else noticed this at other schools? (I may be an outlier, since my S is north of 6' and I'm always comparing actor heights) Is there something genetic that preconditions shorter-than-average young people to have a passion for MT? (I get the whole, "I was too short to compete in sports" or "Other kids picked on me because I was short and I never fit in" thing) Are shorter actors more "marketable" and therefor give your alumni an edge in getting hired so let's pack 'em in? I do know that S has been rebuffed by a local casting agent (who has many clients in film/video) because he is "too tall" for television. Are these kids partially chosen because they can play "young" or will "fit" in the video realm? The cast members' credits listed in the program also brought to mind another debate that pops up frequently here on CC: a few of the student cast members - all freshmen to juniors - had previous film/video/TV credits listed and two freshmen already had equity cards and broadway experience. Is this perhaps evidence that "tippy top" programs get freshman classes made up of students who would "shine" no matter what program they were plopped into? I am in no way disparaging the talent/skill of these students - the ensemble singing was phenomenal! I'm just curious if others are seeing a similar preponderance of a particular "type" at other schools - not talking about "underrepresented populations" (this cast was significantly more ethnically diverse than the kids at my S's program). The students at my S's program seem to have more "character" or "quirky" types than was evident in this cast (to be fair, this particular show would not highlight those particular traits and perhaps "those" students were not cast or those traits were subjugated in this staging). Just wondering what others out there might be noticing in regards to "types" being accepted to any given school. Is this a reflection of which future graduates are deemed "hirable"? The leads in a recent touring broadway musical that came to my town were not as tall as one might expect - does this make it possible to pack more actors into a single bus, therefor representing a cost-saving measure?;) Have those of you with film/video interests had experience with actor height being an issue? Please don't see this query as an intention to start a firestorm. I'm just a parent trying to peer into the MT "crystal ball". Hah!

Well I guess someone had to do it and I feel like CC has helped me so much already that I might as well be the one! So, about us. We live in the Pacific Northwest and my D has been involved in MT for about 5-6 years. She has taken voice lessons for 5 years and has had a variety of acting classes and intensives including one summer at BAA. She is a 5'9" belter with a strong lyric soprano and a somewhat quirky, comedic personality. She started very late with dance but she is a decent tapper and can learn combos quickly. Her grades are good but her test scores are meh so she will not be applying to any of the "top" schools. She has a variety of regional and professional credits including a recent production of "Carrie the Musical" starring the incomparable Alice Ripley. We are working with MTCA and can't say enough good things about them. Incredibly grateful that we will have all of you and look forward to supporting each other as we go through the process. GO CLASS OF 2019!!
