Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type

$

I started with the Big List of MT Colleges (the infamous Post #2) already on CC, of which I am so very thankful for. I removed graduate programs and any programs outside of the U.S. I sorted the schools into categories: Non-Audition BA’s/BM’s, Non-Audition BFA’s, Audition BA’s/BM’s, Audition BFA’s, and BA-to-BFA programs. Please be aware that many non-audition schools may require an audition to be considered for scholarships. Also, I urge you to do your research – there are many BA programs that act like BFA’s, and many BFA programs that have full general education requirements. Look at the curriculum, read the CC posts, and talk to current students and professors to find the right match. Following the name of the school in parentheses is a note if the program is other than a BA or BFA in MT, the state where the school is located, and in some cases, the number of students the school yields each year. I have done away with the mark of a + to indicate difficulty of admittance. Most audition programs are very difficult to get in to. Some are not quite as difficult, but cut students. Again, do your research. I added an * if the school requires a pre-screening DVD/digital upload to be invited to audition. Please do not use this thread as a discussion on the various programs. Let’s keep it as much of a pure resource as possible. For the most part, the details on this list were compiled by previous CC moderators and updated by parents. Please help to keep this list updated. If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, if you know a school has changed from BA to a BFA or vice versa, or you know the number of students in an entering freshman class, please copy and paste and mark your change in red. If you prefer, you can PM me and I will make the change. I hope this helps! Rutgers University and other partners plan to build a performing arts center that will allow the Mason Gross School of the Arts to launch a musical theater program and expand its opera program. The arts center is expected to open for the fall 2019 semester, when Mason Gross will launch its musical theater program.

My D is between a great BFA Musical Theatre Program and the BFA Theatre & Performance at Emerson. She absolutely loves Emerson but originally applied for MT. She is intrigued by the flexibility of the Emerson program but worries because MT is all she has known. Can anyone weigh in on this program, on casting at Emerson and student life?

Big List of MT Colleges: By State

MODERATOR NOTE: FOR THE MOST UPDATED LIST, PLEASE SEE POST #2 WHICH IS MORE COMPLETE THAN POST #1'S LIST. Here is the big list of schools that offer a musical theater degree. This list was formerly part of a FAQ MT college site that a now CC "alum", Shauna, had compiled as a Geocities site that CC posted a link to at the top of our MT Forum. As the Geocities site is no longer available and is discontinued by Yahoo, CC is posting this valuable resource of the list of MT Colleges that was formerly compiled. As Shauna wrote on her original Geocities site, this list was made in large part by Dancersmom and doctorjohn, two CC members, and although pretty much everyone on the board has contributed at some point, these two did the vast majority of the work. (Thanks also to ILMomsk, Lauren Z., Nick, klass, Lexasmom, Mary Anne, and MusThCC for updates.) The list begins with colleges that offer undergraduate musical theater degrees. They are organized alphabetically by state. Following the name of the school in parentheses is the type of degree they offer, and, in some cases, the number of students the school offers admission to. Colleges that offer graduate degrees are at the bottom of the page. If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, please let us know. KEY: A + next to a school indicates that they are especially selective (that they admit only a small number of applicants). A ~ next to a school indicates that they are non-audition (that they do not require an audition to major in musical theater). Schools without this mark do require an audition. NYU/TIsch - Studio Placement

I am a latecomer to this forum and decided to start a new thread on TIsch studio placement because I saw that it seems to be overtaking the general Sharing/Venting forum. My D applied to TIsch hoping to be accepted to New Studio but she selected All Studios when she auditioned. She found out that she was placed in Stella Adler and we are trying to learn more about the studio beyond what we can find on the NYU website. I am wondering whether there is much if any NYU oversight for these "external" studios. Also, will it be really difficult for her to fit voice lessons and some dance training in on her own since it won't be part of her curriculum? Is there anyone here who is familiar with Adler and whether a kid who's first love is musical theatre could be happy there? Thanks!

Hey guys! I'm starting this page for those accepted and have decided on or those accepted but still considering UWSP for BFA training! I have seen that Alcoka1 and KelviVan have already been accepted, which is amazing! Let me know if anybody has any questions to help them make the final decision, or just in general! I'm finishing my freshman year here as an MT, and would love to get to know those accepted!

Hey brilliant CC folks - can we make a list of the schools that offer a good bit of similarity between their straight acting and MT programs, especially those that include singing and dance, and allow auditions within their respective department's productions? It might make it easier for future applicants to create their school list! Thx a zillion. :)

I recently got accepted to LIU Post's musical theatre program after my walk-in audition at NYC Unifieds! It was my most enjoyable audition yet, and I felt like the students and admissions people who were there were all very close and very excited about the school! Many other kids that I talked to who had auditioned also commented that they felt like the auditor was very interested them as a unique individual, and I would agree with that. The auditor was actually the only one I have met who actually stood up and shook my hand before I started! I'm interested in the program, but I don't know much about it! Does anyone here feel like they could give an overview of the program or even share their opinions about it?
