So my DD has an amazing desire to go into musical theater...she has been performing for so many years and now the time to apply has come and she's strongly telling us she wants to take a year off after high school and during that time use it to travel to schools and apply then.
Does anyone have any wisdom about the inclination for Musical Theater schools/programs to allow this or disallow this? Does it have any impact on acceptance or possible scholarships? Any thougthts would help.
Thanks.

Happy Decision Day, all. I thought that since my D's decision is to take one more year to prepare, improve, form a better list-I would start a thread for any students/parents who are doing the same. I would be grateful to lean on, learn from, vent to, share resources with, etc. Anyone?

Michigan, CCM & Carnegie Mellon 3 great articles about their training approach
Hi There!
Take a look on these 3 pretty cool articles about CCM, Michigan and Carnegie Mellon MT programs.

Are drama schools ignoring our musical theatre heritage?
Hello,
I found this good article about drama schools and their MT training... something that got my attention was that according to the artistic director " I’m agog at how some of the younger generation are simply not able to sing a song written before 1960 without giving it a full pop riff. It seems to me that Mariah and Christina have a lot to answer for".
This article is from the UK but I still believe that US MT and UK MT have parallels, a lot of you will disagree with me but MT has been globalized so as MT education worldwide. Even those US Americans considering applying to UK MT Schools should consider this too.
Also it shows a certain reality on MT becasue the author says that " I suspect only certain drama school graduates will survive: those who are ready to come into the audition room willing to hear what is being sought in any given production and who are able to adapt and deliver that particular thing in 20 minutes or so. The readiness is all."

Programs with acting focus
which programs would you say focus mostly on acting? I know carnegie mellon and wright do...

Programs that are "forgiving" to dance deficits in auditions, but have excellent dance training
Would love to hear parent/student feedback! Please provide info on your school if they are known for having an understanding attitude re beginner dancers (especially for males) during the audition process, yet they offer strong/focused dance training to truly increase skill level by graduation. It would be awesome to know if these programs (overall) are more based in acting or voice, as well.TIA, as always!

Chance me/Where should I apply/is my list well-weighted?
Hello, so I'm a student hoping to major in MT in college and I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me on how to weight my application list in terms of selectivity/if anyone had ideas as to where I should apply.
Here are my stats:
3.89 GPA unweighted 4.89 weighted
1450 SAT/31 ACT (these scores are without prep so I'm hoping to raise them a bit, probably with focus on SAT)
-selective public school in Chicago
-I've been in both my school's play and musical in the past year and a musical over last summer. I was put into the special performance ensemble for a benefit for the summer musical.
-I've been in plenty of other shows and was also in Goodman Theater's summer acting intensive in the summer before my freshman year. (Few recent leads which concerns me a lot!)
-I danced from ages 7-16 (not dancing now
Bc no time!)
-I've taken voice lessons for the past three years and recently I was selected to sing as a representative of private lessons (as a soloist) in the place I take voice lessons in spring benefit.
I've been accepted into a few summer intensives and Second City's advanced acting program so that will be my summee add one.
Right now I'm thinking about applying to Illinois Wesleyan, NYU, Lawrence University, CCM, University of Illinois, umich (maybe), pace, Marymount manhattan, and maybe a few more. I was wondering if (based on my stats) this list was well-weighted and if I have a real chance at most/any of these schools.
I feel like a total narcissist posting this but I'm concerned and everyone on here seems to have a way better idea of what to do than I do.
Thank you and sorry this was so long

How important in Music Theory or playing instrument - Quadruple threat now?
Hi-
My junior D getting ready for next years BFA insanity. For MT I am noticing more and more (Great Comet etc.) that the actors, on top of their marvelous talent....are also accomplished musicians.
My daughters HS is weak when it comes to music and the arts. She has a strong dance background. I know they will study music theory once in BFA (hopefully) program but aside from various choral groups and the plays and musicals D has no real music theory training.
Of course any added skill is a major plus especially in music but is this becoming almost expected as these programs become more competitive and this market saturated?
I was FB snooping a bit being curious about the girls ('cuz I have one and there are so many) that got the golden tickets at CMU also Michigan. At least two were excellent musicians. Singer/songwriters with stuff on youtube. Also most of the other handful had NYC agents or several awards (beauty pageants ...CMU?) not just talent awards. No shade there, just different than what I expected. More bold faced commercial perhaps in some respects .
It's early and no coffee so I'm rambling...sorry but-
Have things gotten so competitive that they are expecting Quadruple threats now?
I'm trying to get my D to take some of these crazy top top tiers off her list. I fear the daunting task ahead....
(no food or coffee for blood work this AM apologize for the brain fog).

MA Musical Theatre Programs in the UK
I have been accepted to a few MA Musical Theatre Programs in the UK and I am having a very hard time deciding between the programs.
I've narrowed my choices down the The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS). I didn't get good vibes from the schools based out of London.
Appreciate any insight.

Music Theatre Applicant
Hello! I am planning on auditioning for the music theatre program at the university of hartford, and due to family finances, I have never taken a dance class (I know basic ballet, tap, and movement). I have a huge willingness to learn, but realistically, would it even be worth auditioning even though I have not been professionally trained? I would really appreciate the advice. Thank you so much!

What Musical Theatre Colleges Should I consider?
Helly, I'm a 17 year old Korean American Junior in highschool, class of 2018. I love musical theatre and want to get into the field in college despite my parents not wanting me to since it's not a steady job, however I love singing and I don't care if it means working as a waitress for the rest of my life.
I have a 3.0 GPA because of two F's I got during my sophmore year where I was struggling with depression and family issues but my grades are now back on track. I am taking the SAT this June and ACT probably this August. My PSAT score was a 1190(Not great but it was my first PSAT and I am currently taking SAT Courses).
I've been in a church/christian choir since I was 8, school choir for 3 years so far in highschool and have no dance experience(which is terrible I know ;-;) I only discovered my passion for musical theatre during my sophmore year and plan on auditioning for my school's musical theatre in the beginning of my senior year.
I need help in finding a list of colleges with a good musical theatre program that offers a BFA. My top schools have been Ithaca College, Juilliard, and Berkelee but I feel as though my chances are not high in those for musical theatre(ESPECIALLY ITHACA AND JUILLIARD PHEW) I live in California so UC Irvine seemed like a good choice except they offer a BA and my gpa isn't enough to get into Irvine without two years of community college, which I am open to except I don't know if I want to go to Irvine. Can people recommened me potential schools that offer a BFA in musical theatre. I am willing to go anywhere and location of the college doesn't matter to me ^^. Thank you guys so much :).

Arizona State University - Musical Theatre
Greetings,
My name is Brian DeMaris. I am the new director of the MT program at Arizona State University in Tempe. I came here just last year from Ithaca College, where I used to be the music director of the opera and musical theatre programs.
ASU is not prominently featured on this site, so I'd like to take a moment to tell you all about our MT program.
Some things I think you should know about the ASU MT program:
As a B.M. MT degree, this is a place where the musical training is rigorous. But we have also recently DOUBLED our acting and dance training in the degree, and added crucial audition training and career entrepreneurship courses, as well as multiple technical theatre courses. Students can study either or both opera and musical theatre, yet still be involved in all areas of theatre, film and dance and digital media engineering, across our incredible Herberger Institute - the largest arts and design school in the country.
Along with the Theatre, Film an Dance main-stage season, ASU produces nearly 20 full productions of operas, musicals, dance performances and plays each year, with almost half of it being entirely new works. ASU Film Spark produces countless films annually, many of which involve our MT majors. In addition to our main-stage season, we also offer student lab productions, new works readings, scenes programs, and two showcases each year. Our program also features formal collaborations and professional performance and study/cover opportunities with Arizona Opera and the Phoenix Theatre. ASU was rated #1 in Innovation for the past two years in a row by U.S. New and World Report, ahead of MIT and Stanford.
We’re the country’s largest public research university, which means we have courses in pretty much anything at all levels.
It's pretty easy to double major here and several of our MTs are double majors, many with their other majors outside of the arts.
We have an amazing faculty and staff in addition to numerous faculty associates who are active professionals regionally and nationally. All of our MT faculty are professionally active performers.
We have an incredible facility with shops, warehouses, rehearsal studios, offices, and our own theatre - five full stories dedicated entirely to our opera and musical theatre program.
Dozens of national tours come through ASU each year, and cast members talk to our students and even take our classes while they’re here. Music direction students observe performances from the pit and meet the conductors and musicians involved with each production.
Our tuition is among the lowest in the nation, we have plenty of scholarship, and our class sizes are small (about 10-14 students in each MT class). The entire undergraduate musical theater program has about 50 students combined. This helps us stay focused on individual student learning and provide abundant performance opportunities, both of which are our pedagogical priorities.
While our students have plenty of opportunities to take dance and acting classes, our philosophy of integrated training is seen in our team-taught classes offered every semester in every degree, which are aimed at synthesizing acting, singing and movement skills from the very beginning.
Through our formal professional collaborations, students can receive credit to participate in productions with Phoenix Theatre (where they can also earn Equity points). Our class and production schedules actually work around local professional production schedules in order to help you take advantage of every opportunity.

We perform for dozens of elementary and secondary schools each year through our specially funded outreach performance program, which brings students from across the region to see our shows in our own theatre, many gaining exposure to opera and musical theatre for the very first time.
We have a 50-member Guild that directly supports opera and music theatre students by providing grants for additional study opportunities, summer programs, and emergency funding.
We bring in numerous professional conductors, directors, designers and other guest artists from around the world each year to work with our students on productions and in classes.
Phoenix is the nation's 5th largest city and still growing. It's incredibly diverse, and so is our student body. It also happens to be a vibrant theatre community, with a lucrative professional musical theatre scene. Phoenix Theatre (our educational producing partners), Arizona Theatre Company, Arizona Broadway Theatre, and Childsplay, are just some of the nationally recognized organizations nearby where many of our currently enrolled students and alumni have been able to take professional contracts, even while enrolled in the program. Many of ASU's alumni are founders and leaders of the incredible theater companies here in the Sun Valley.
This year we will be launching a Phoenix Industry/Alumni Night Showcase at the Phoenix Theatre, and we will also be taking our graduating students to NYC for our program's first New York Showcase.
Also this year we've launched a new works initiative, that will give our students the experience of being part of musicals in development from their first to final stages. We're partnering with nationally recognized composers, writers, producers and production companies to make this happen.
While the weather worsens throughout the year in many places, in Phoenix it gets better as the school year goes on. Just wait till you’re sitting outside memorizing your lines in January under the cacti and palm trees and 70-degree sun!
I endearingly refer to us as the "hottest MT program in the U.S." I'm referring to the temperature of course :)
We put students first in everything: season selection, casting, teaching, scheduling, guest artists, you name it.
Interested in stage direction, stage management, marketing and publicity, or something else outside of your normal course of study? You can expand your skills through the annual LAB productions. These are entirely student-proposed and student-led productions (up to 4 per year) that seek to reach beyond ordinary boundaries and explore new ways of opera and musical theatre art-making in our community.
ASU has modeled itself as the New American University, which you can learn about at newamericanuniversity.asu.edu. Lyric Opera Theatre is part of the School of Music in ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, the largest arts and design school in the world. This institute’s main purpose is to foster collaborations and interdisciplinary work between music, theatre, film, dance, design, digital media, visual arts, and more. We are as much about collaborating and thinking outside of the box as we are about individual artistry. No matter where you are on your personal and professional path, no matter how you envision the future of our art form and your role in it, you will find a place to start, explore, grow, and continue here.
See everything we have to offer at https://music.asu.edu/opera-musical-theatre. Call, write, or come visit us at anytime.

Musical Theater Majors That Allow Double Majoring
I love musical theater and am certain that I want to major in it, but I would also like to major in something like journalism, or professional writing of some sort. I know that with a rigorous BFA in MT it becomes nearly impossible to dabble in another subject, but if there are any universities with a BFA in MT that have and allow a double major in journalism as well, I would love to know. Obviously, in my situation, a BA is most likely better suited if I were to attempt to complete two majors in the standard four years so any schools that offer a BA in musical theater and a degree journalism/writing would be information that would be greatly appreciated. Auditon or non-auditon does not matter much to me, but it would help if the school was in a location where internships and opportunities are abundant. Any information on any of these categories would be helpful. Thank you!

Standardizing college theatre / musical theatre auditions
Over the years, we've had many discussions about standardizing the process of MT/Acting auditions for college on these boards, and it appears there is some discussion about this by MT educators. (Most recently this was discussed extensively starting with post #4365 on page 291 of the thread called “Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)”.
In any case, while I cannot post a link here, there is a blog on Huff Po right now entitled "Stressed Out! The College Audition Quagmire" by Mary Anna Dennard interviewing Sherri Sanders on just that subject.
Sanders is involved with Music Theatre Educators Association (MTEA) and she is trying to spearhead efforts to do just that.
Sounds like a longer-term effort, but she's very passionate about it. Google the title of the article and you'll find it easily.
