I though that this could be educational for any aspiring MT majors. Here is a video of Matthew Morrison ( Glee, Hairspray) at about 14 playing the Captain in a sound of music. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KP1J-yZ_drk His voice wasn't fully developed yet but he showed poise as an actor.

Hello! I am hopeful some parents or students ( current or graduated) can help speak to this topic. Do any of you have experience dealing with a chronic illness ( or your S or D that has a chronic illness) who has gone through a BFA MT program? If so, can you share experiences, thoughts, advice and suggestions? Thank you in advance . BTB

Happy Decision Day, all. I thought that since my D's decision is to take one more year to prepare, improve, form a better list-I would start a thread for any students/parents who are doing the same. I would be grateful to lean on, learn from, vent to, share resources with, etc. Anyone?

Does any know if you audition to get into the school for musical theatre. Website makes it seem like everyone enters as. BA MT and then auditions later for BFA. But other posts on this site made it seem like you audition to just get in . Can it be a safety with no audition? Thanks

Braces at College Auditions?

Hey! I was just wondering if having braces would affect my chances of getting in to college. I'm a junior, but my family has never been able to afford them until now, so I'm not sure if I should just stick with my teeth until after acceptance to a college Musical Theatre program or get them and hope for the best. Does anyone know of someone who got accepted while auditioning with braces? How will they affect my chances? Anything helps!

Northwestern’s incoming first-year class to receive free ‘Hamilton’ tickets

Clearly our kids graduated too soon. :) But seriously, I think this is a great way to -- among other things -- help build future MT audiences by showing a large group of tomorrow's leaders how excting and relevant live theatre can be. ************************************************************************************************************************* All of Northwestern’s incoming first-year class to receive free ‘Hamilton’ tickets May 23, 2017 The entire incoming first-year class will receive free tickets to see “Hamilton” in Chicago as part of Northwestern’s One Book One Northwestern program, the University announced Tuesday. According to a news release, the class — which has approximately 1,900 students — will be split in half to attend two showings of the musical. The first half will attend a matinee performance Oct. 4 and the second half will attend a matinee Oct. 11, the release said. “We felt that the chance for our students to see ‘Hamilton,’ which also considers the issues raised in ‘Our Declaration,’ presented a unique opportunity,” history Prof. Geraldo Cadava, faculty chair of the 2017-18 One Book Steering Committee, said in the release. “Both the book and the play have injected new perspectives into the study of the American Revolution, and both unquestionably will challenge and engage our students.” Written and composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the award-winning musical combines hip-hop music, dance and dynamic storytelling to narrate the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s founding fathers. According to the release, all students in the incoming class will receive a copy of “Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality” by Danielle Allen. The book re-examines the Declaration of Independence and argues that liberty and equality are interdependent, the release said. “Every year the One Book program provides the Northwestern community, especially students who are new to campus that fall, an opportunity to join in a shared experience,” said Nancy Cunniff, director of the One Book program, said in the release. “I’m confident that next fall’s experience will be one those students will remember.”

So I've been taking ballet since freshmen year and I LOVE IT and I've always wanted to try to go on pointe. However, I haven't been able to fully commit my time to it because of shows so I was just wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to be able to go on pointe and how it would be possible to do so in college?? Thank you!!!!!!

Double Major MT and Film

Hey! Musical Theatre and Filmmaking are both huge passions of mine, but I know that an MT BFA might not allow double majors within the same school, depending on the college or university. Does anyone know of any schools in the NYC/North Jersey area that definitely allow a double major in MT and Film?

Programs that are "forgiving" to dance deficits in auditions, but have excellent dance training

Would love to hear parent/student feedback! Please provide info on your school if they are known for having an understanding attitude re beginner dancers (especially for males) during the audition process, yet they offer strong/focused dance training to truly increase skill level by graduation. It would be awesome to know if these programs (overall) are more based in acting or voice, as well.TIA, as always!

Current SUNY New Paltz student with MT questions?

Warning: lengthy read ahead! Hello! I'm currently a SUNY New Paltz freshman Theater major and Music minor who wants to either double major, or possibly transfer. Let me say right off the bat that while their Theater program isn't exactly what I want, that it is a GREAT program, and I am in no way trashing it. Academically, my experience at New Paltz so far has been great. That being said, their Theater Performance program is a very acting-heavy program I know that after freshman year, a lot of electives open up, and many of them are voice and dance classes; I have NO idea how many of them are, that's my problem. I want to double major with Music, with Voice as my primary instrument. This would have me covered on Acting and Singing, my two stronger points. However, I only have around 2 years of dance experience, and I'm afraid that not immersing myself in dance now will only hurt me at auditions in the future. I am taking drop-in classes at BDC while home (I live in Queens), but the cost adds up over time. On the contrary, my "back-up plan" is teaching, but not for the reasons most people consider it a backup plan. My own teachers have always inspired me so much, and I've even become very close to some of them. If I don't "make it", I would love to pay forward what my teachers have given me. Double majoring would only help me here, potentially qualifying me to teach both subjects, possibly? I'm not sure how that works. I've heard that double majoring in Theater and Music is very hard, with both majors being around 50 credits, and I'm afraid that it might not be worth it, at a school who's name isn't very well known. That being said, I'd be willing to do some summer work, and I can't really afford most well-known schools; the SUNY tuition was one of the primary things that attracted me to New Paltz. (And just before anyone mentions it, SUNY Cortland is out of the question. Personal reasons.) As of yesterday, I'm very lightly considering transferring; that's where I'm asking for help. I don't want to be much farther from home than New Paltz if I can avoid it, since I live in Queens, and living near the city as a theater major has it's perks, anyway. Two of my friends have recommended Molloy/CAP21 to me, but they are BFA, and I was unsure of how to work my "education back-up plan" into a BFA. My friend has told me that I could "get an education degree online" - I want to know how realistic this is, since it sounds like a good idea in theory, but might be too good to be true. If this is a practical option, I will be applying to Molloy. I have also considered American MT, where I was previous accepted and couldn't afford, Temple, where I was accepted academically, Marymount Manhattan, because I keep hearing the name, and Buffalo for the SUNY pricetag and that one of my best friends may start going there this fall. Probably not the last one, but it's worth a shot for the SUNY price alone. Does anybody have any advice, any knowledge about the 4 schools in question, or any convincing enough reasons to get me to stay at New Paltz? It would be much appreciated! :D

Well I guess someone had to do it and I feel like CC has helped me so much already that I might as well be the one! So, about us. We live in the Pacific Northwest and my D has been involved in MT for about 5-6 years. She has taken voice lessons for 5 years and has had a variety of acting classes and intensives including one summer at BAA. She is a 5'9" belter with a strong lyric soprano and a somewhat quirky, comedic personality. She started very late with dance but she is a decent tapper and can learn combos quickly. Her grades are good but her test scores are meh so she will not be applying to any of the "top" schools. She has a variety of regional and professional credits including a recent production of "Carrie the Musical" starring the incomparable Alice Ripley. We are working with MTCA and can't say enough good things about them. Incredibly grateful that we will have all of you and look forward to supporting each other as we go through the process. GO CLASS OF 2019!!

It's close enough to June 1! Let's get started! I have a D - rising senior. She is my third child to embark on the college BFA process. She is interested in a mix of MT and Acting schools. Her strengths are singing, acting, dancing, instrument (in that order). Her list is 65% complete - although she needs to land her BA safety schools. She will be spending the summer in Carnegie's pre-college drama program. We are still debating how much we will need/use the services of a coach; I suspect we will make those final decisions when she returns from Carnegie. Best of luck to my fellow organizer/sherpa/therapist parents!

Training vs. Experience-- which is more important?

I've been in an number of shows, which are mostly ensemble roles but never had any actual training. Does this make me at an disadvantage for college auditions? I do have a resume though. So, is one more emphasized than the other? or are they equally sought out?

Hi, So in my English class my teacher is having us answer college application essay questions and I was wondering if schools like CCPA, Boston conservatory, or any school with a separate application for performing arts, had special essay questions. Is there a website I can look them up on or could you put some examples? Thank you
