Clearly our kids graduated too soon. :) But seriously, I think this is a great way to -- among other things -- help build future MT audiences by showing a large group of tomorrow's leaders how excting and relevant live theatre can be.

All of Northwestern’s incoming first-year class to receive free ‘Hamilton’ tickets
May 23, 2017
The entire incoming first-year class will receive free tickets to see “Hamilton” in Chicago as part of Northwestern’s One Book One Northwestern program, the University announced Tuesday.
According to a news release, the class — which has approximately 1,900 students — will be split in half to attend two showings of the musical. The first half will attend a matinee performance Oct. 4 and the second half will attend a matinee Oct. 11, the release said.
“We felt that the chance for our students to see ‘Hamilton,’ which also considers the issues raised in ‘Our Declaration,’ presented a unique opportunity,” history Prof. Geraldo Cadava, faculty chair of the 2017-18 One Book Steering Committee, said in the release. “Both the book and the play have injected new perspectives into the study of the American Revolution, and both unquestionably will challenge and engage our students.”
Written and composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the award-winning musical combines hip-hop music, dance and dynamic storytelling to narrate the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s founding fathers.
According to the release, all students in the incoming class will receive a copy of “Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality” by Danielle Allen. The book re-examines the Declaration of Independence and argues that liberty and equality are interdependent, the release said.
“Every year the One Book program provides the Northwestern community, especially students who are new to campus that fall, an opportunity to join in a shared experience,” said Nancy Cunniff, director of the One Book program, said in the release. “I’m confident that next fall’s experience will be one those students will remember.”

Temple University
Anyone familiar with this program and have an opinion? I believe that there's an MT BFA in addition to BAs in Acting, Directing, Design/Prod, MT, and Theater Education, some by audition.
Any thoughts on academic and/or merit scholarships? I believe it's a public university? Also, what's the campus like (urban? suburban? campus-y?)--do most students live on campus vs nearby apartments?
Anything else I'm forgetting to ask?
Thanks!

Current Broadway stars in High School.
I though that this could be educational for any aspiring MT majors.
Here is a video of Matthew Morrison ( Glee, Hairspray) at about 14 playing the Captain in a sound of music.

His voice wasn't fully developed yet but he showed poise as an actor.

Advice for a Possible Musical Theatre Transfer?
Hello! I'm an upcoming college freshman who currently is a Music Education major (voice as my primary instrument) at a local public university (the music school gave me a good amount money, and I loved the head of the music department). However, I am realizing a little too late that I should have pursued Musical Theatre, as it's been my ultimate love since eighth grade, but I talked myself out of it due to a lack of experience compared to other applicants (my high school's drama department was severely lacking and put on one show a year and wasn't taken seriously by even the director), as well as the fact that I've never taken a dance class. The way I see it now, I have a few options, but am not sure of which is the best for me to pursue.
My school has a BA in Musical Theatre, but it's not very prestigious (and I lose my scholarship if I change majors, so without the scholarship and the head of the music department, I'm not sure how much I love the school). Still, even without the scholarship, the school is inexpensive enough where my parents would feel comfortable covering the tuition, thankfully.
I could also transfer into a school with a BFA in Musical Theatre. However, debt is a concern of mine, as I know how difficult a career in musical theatre is, and not to mention the fact that it's not exactly lucrative. I am aware that I'd probably have to restart as a Freshman, which I wouldn't mind except for the fact that it's more tuition to pay, and even more debt if my parents do not decide to help out. A school that is quite competitive but would not be as expensive that I'm already looking into is Montclair (I almost chose the school, and now I'm wishing I did).
Another option I've come across is to possibly switch to Vocal Performance and then get my Masters in Musical Theatre, or even get my masters after a BA in Musical Theatre, but I'm not sure if it'd be smarter and less expensive in the long run to just get a BFA.
I apologize that this got sort of long, and for any grammar mistakes, but I've been lurking on College Confidential for a while before I finally made this account, so I figured it was the perfect place to get some advice and wisdom! Thanks in advance!

International Thespian Festival Auditions
Does anyone know what the auditions are like at the Thespian Festival in Nebraska? I heard that it's in a black box theatre. The info online says that you have to stay for the entire session which could be an hour to an hour and a half but the auditions are only 90 seconds each. Any idea why we need to stay so long?

BA, BM and BFA MT degrees
This topic was raised several years ago and I am reaching out to confirm my understanding and that nothing of substance has changed on the topic:
A BA has more general education requirements (compared to the BM or BFA) ... while
a BM would focus more on music courses (relative to the BA or BFA) .... while lastly with
a BFA degree, anywhere from about 60% to 95% of the student's total coursework is MT-related (compared to the BA or BM).
In every instance, the curricula for the MT programs being considered should be reviewed regardless of whether it offers a MA, BM or BFA degree

The best merit-based MT Scholarships
To attract top talent, some Music(al) Theater programs offer merit-based scholarships; they don't necessarily award it each year... just when they identify candidates who meet the criteria.
For those who have gone through (or follow) the application process, what are the top ones you have seen? If all you recall is the school / scholarship name that suffices; if you know the criteria that's helpful too.
If there are any MT scholarships that are unaffiliated with any particular institution, I would be interested in learning about them too (although I don't know if any such scholarships exist related to MT).
Just looking for your top one to five MT scholarships that you've seen and that most impressed you. Thanks for sharing for those new to the process!

General questions about Unifieds
I have the following questions about Unifieds; help to answering any of them is most appreciated:
1. Do all the same institutions (i.e., Universities, colleges, schools, academies, conservatories) attend all three Unifieds or do some of the institutions only attend one or two of them? An example of an institution or two attending less than all three would be helpful for illustrative purposes.
2. Chicago Unifieds lasts double the length of time of Los Angeles and New York. Is that just due to the number of prospective applicants attending Chicago compared to Los Angeles or New York or due to something else [and in this latter case, what is/are the factor(s)]?
3. If the prospective applicant has their heart set on one or two MT programs above the rest, is it better to audition at these program directly [at their location] as opposed to doing the Unifieds for them?
4. For anyone having gone through Unifieds, is there something you would have preferred knowing in advance that you didn't know going into them -- if so, what is it that you learned?

Musical Theatre Minor
I am very interested in staying with Musical Theatre in the future but my parents say it would be in my best interest to minor in it instead of majoring. I've tried looking for schools that have musical theatre minors but there are not many out there. Does anyone know of colleges that offer a musical theatre minor?

Liberal Arts Colleges offering significant musical theater opportunities
I'd be curious to hear about liberal arts colleges that offer significant opportunities to perform in or direct musical theater productions. By "liberal arts college," I mean a college that's pretty small (generally 1000-3000 students) and focused on traditional academic subjects. Amherst, Bard, Bates, Beloit, Carleton, Earlham, Grinnell, Haverford, Lawrence, Lewis & Clark, Macalester, Milsaps, Occidental, Pitzer, Pomona, Puget Sound, Reed, Sarah Lawrence, Swarthmore, Vassar, Willamette, Whitman, Wooster, etc. I'd also like to know which ones offer musical theater for credit and which merely have student run productions. If there are very academically focused universities that should be in the discussion, I'd like to hear about them too, but they're not the focus of this question. Thanks!

Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type
I started with the Big List of MT Colleges (the infamous Post #2) already on CC, of which I am so very thankful for. I removed graduate programs and any programs outside of the U.S. I sorted the schools into categories: Non-Audition BAs/BMs, Non-Audition BFAs, Audition BAs/BMs, Audition BFAs, and BA-to-BFA programs. Please be aware that many non-audition schools may require an audition to be considered for scholarships. Also, I urge you to do your research there are many BA programs that act like BFAs, and many BFA programs that have full general education requirements. Look at the curriculum, read the CC posts, and talk to current students and professors to find the right match.
Following the name of the school in parentheses is a note if the program is other than a BA or BFA in MT, the state where the school is located, and in some cases, the number of students the school yields each year. I have done away with the mark of a + to indicate difficulty of admittance. Most audition programs are very difficult to get in to. Some are not quite as difficult, but cut students. Again, do your research. I added an * if the school requires a pre-screening DVD/digital upload to be invited to audition.
Please do not use this thread as a discussion on the various programs. Lets keep it as much of a pure resource as possible.
For the most part, the details on this list were compiled by previous CC moderators and updated by parents. Please help to keep this list updated. If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, if you know a school has changed from BA to a BFA or vice versa, or you know the number of students in an entering freshman class, please copy and paste and mark your change in red. If you prefer, you can PM me and I will make the change. I hope this helps!

Questions to ask at MT Admissions Visit
Hi Everyone,
I am preparing my list of questions for our first admissions visit, and I know that I have previously seen a fantastic set of questions in this forum. That said, I cannot find it! I wish I had book-marked it or copied the questions when I saw it initially. Can anyone point me to that previous post or give me some pointers on things to ask? I'm afraid I will miss asking about something important.
Thanks in advance!

What is your Out of Pocket Limit
College is more expensive than when I attended in the 80's. I remember paying less than $35.00 per credit hour. Not anymore.
Therefore, I am wondering, what is your Out of Pocket Limit for Tuition, Room, and Board. I am not talking about travel, books, etc. Mine is around $15,000 per year, and that may be high. Unfortunately, this will eliminate my D from attending some of the bigger programs should she be accepted.
What is your limit? Why is it set so high or so low?
