Casting controversy at Ithaca High School involves race

I thought this was really something for us parents to know about, if you have not already read about it. Should Esmerelda be played by a girl of color? It sure caused a stir, and even went national. It brings up an interesting discussion and causes our kids start thinking about these things. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/08/theater/hunchback-of-notre-dame-ithaca-high-school.html?rref=collection/sectioncollection/theater&action=click&contentCollection=theater&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=10&pgtype=sectionfront

Hey all, my D got rejected from the University of Michigan via email, but then an hour later received an email from their Head of Performance asking for her number to call her some time next week (he said he wanted to wait till next week to have his notes with him.) Can anyone shed some light on what's going on here?

If I were an MT admissions officer I would....

The waiting has gotten to me and I am envisioning if I ruled the MT college admission process. As tough as it sounds I would be like CCM and cut you as soon as I know that we don't want you. Even though my daughter was sad she knew and could move on. This waiting is causing all sorts of stress and second guessing. She is pretty sure she has two more rejections and hopefully 2 acceptances. We shall see. OK friends what would you do if you ruled the process??????

carnegie mellon pre-college AP/EV vs. artificial intelligence

hey, i am applying to Carnegie Mellon's summer program for high school students( i'm a rising senior). I'm as interested in the AP/EV program as i am in the artificial intelligence program. since I can't decide which program is better for me, I'm trying to base my final decision on the basis of the acceptance rates of the two programs. Which one of the two programs has a higher acceptance rate? For example, I have heard the SAMS program is by far the most competitive summer program at the school. aside from my question of which one has a higher acceptance rate, how do the acceptance rates of the two programs( AP/EV and Artificial intelligence) differ?

Hello everyone, I just want to make people aware about a fantastic Summer Intensive Program in San Francisco, called SUTE. https://summeruniversitytheatreexperience.com My daughter (now a Freshman at Syracuse) attended it before she started her Senior Year in Highschool. She worked with faculty from CMU, UM, Texas State, PACE, Otterbein, USC, Syracuse, Ithaca... to name a few. They work with the students 1:1 and as a group, and suggest audition songs as well... Great option to keep in mind.

Very interesting perspective from MT college auditor

I had an interesting conversation with a competitive college that auditioned my child. In their small, close-knit program (think 8-12 students per MT class), they evaluate the kids in an effort to form a cohesive unit per stage of development .In other words, while they realize that most kids are not triple threats, and that prospective students come with strengths and weaknesses; they are looking for kids at similar levels of development and maturity, NOT necessarily talent. Their philosophy is to create a class that are all in "the same grade", not just "all in middle school". This particular school's MT programming works best if everyone is at least proficient in all 3 disciplines, and if they are not proficient, then they have enough natural ability in a particular discipline to easily catch up with some early remedial work. She said that this is NOT the case for every program. And she said that they have to turn kids down every year, even if they have a high chance of professional success and even if they fit their casting needs... IF they don't fit the "grade level" metaphor mentioned above. Her words, not mine - "powerhouses have been turned down if they don't match with the class we are creating each year". I found this to be pretty remarkable, and a good reminder of why your kid might get a yes or a no from certain programs.

No acceptances?

D was turned down for 4 prescreens, has had 5 live auditions. One of those already said no. Of the remaining 4, she got 2 positive reactions and 2 indifferent reactions. I see on the forum that people are already getting letters from some of our 4 remaining schools. We’ve heard nothing. We were told by people in the know that she has what it takes, but it’s not looking good. So... can anybody speak to surviving 100% rejection if it comes to that?

My 10th grade DD applied to a bunch of SMTI programs (mPulse, STATE, ArtsBridge, Interlochen) and so far she has not been accepted anywhere. Should this be a reality check for us?

Does anyone have information about Broadway Breakthru's summer College Breakthru program in Chicago? Is it a worthwhile program that will provide good preparation for the college audition process? D is a junior and will be auditioning next year. Thanks in advance for any input!

The theatre community is wonderful, in good times and bad.

I love the theatre community and have for many years. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to be a part of it for a very long time. I am writing this with tears rolling down my face as I read how this community has come through to offer not only emotional support but amazing financial support to a beloved member of the theatre community, who had tragedy strike yesterday in NY. She and a friend were returning home from a church event and were struck by a car that went through a red light. She and her friend are both in critical condition and, tragically, both their children who were walking with them, were killed. Since yesterday, the theatre and extended communities have raised ~$300,000 for the two families. The related comfort and support that is going on behind the scenes with getting extended family to the city, looking after the grief stricken husbands, cooking, visiting and supporting family at the hospital, it's just an overwhelming show of a true family. Hug your kids tight today and savor every minute you have with them.

AMDA?

Does anyone have experience with AMDA (NYC)? D gets a lot of marketing material from them. Looking online it seems like a conservatory style or "trade school" with the trade being musical theater. Any ideas about quality? Worthwhile vs a "regular" BFA or BA program?

My MT daughter is graduating this year, and although my D plans all her auditions herself -- I like to know dates and expenses ahead of time. Here's my question -- StrawHats and NETC auditions look to be on the same weekend this year. StrawHats, March 16, 17,18 and NETC March 17, 18, 19, as posted on their websites. Is this likely to change? Also curious where your MT kids are auditioning this year!

Questions about Urinetown and other musicals

After a 10-year hiatus, I am again serving on the board of directors of our community theatre group. We do four shows a year, one of which is a musical. We only do family-friendly shows and stay away from anything that might not be well-known. Some board members think well-known sells tickets. I think the community is sick of R & H and our repeat of shows. I am hoping to shake things up a bit by suggesting new things. We also compete for actors with a second community theatre in town and I think the good actors would be more apt to audition for something new. I have never seen Urinetown (gasp) and I am wondering if it is family friendly. If not, exactly what makes it not? language? sex? controversial subject matter? Any other semi-current shows that would fit the criteria? (occasional curse words are okay as this group will change them to shoot, darn, heck, etc.) Thanks in advance for you help.

Agency Representation

Can we talk a little bit about this? For those familiar with seeking representation, can anyone chime in on these agencies? Emerging Talent Clear Talent Andreadis Luedtke Agency United Film Production Co. Just like schools, I'm sure that "fit" is very important. I would like to know about any experiences that people have had with these agencies. Yes, my child is also seeking information from former classmates in NY about them, but I thought that I would reach out to this lovely group, since you all have had access to so much information throughout the years. Just to add....my graduating senior child, who is an actor first but sings and dances well, has interests in all aspects of performance - cruise ship, stage work, film/tv - doesn't matter, just wants to work. Any info, good or not so good, is greatly appreciated.
